I'm curious to know if anyone has tried night fishing through the ice on Quinte lately. I realize that most people don't do this, but these walleyes should feed at night like they do at other times of the year on Quinte, or on other water bodies. Any attempts or thoughts?

I have tried it twice this year . Not so much as a bite . I used glow lures and everything else in my box . But we just fished in our hut and didn't take any steps to try to find them elsewere . They should bite if you can find them .

Tuftsb, you know I have often wondered if the walleye might might later in the evening, back at our cottage in the summer the walleye seem to bite the best between 10-12 pm. Maybe it would be the same out here, I have never tried it.Give it a try and let us know. :) LM

Winter or sumer I seem to do the best for walleye in the dusk and dawn hours, specifically from about an hour before sundown and maybe for an hour or two afterwards and then the reverse in the morning, where I like to be fishing at least an hour before sun up and then pack it in an hour or so after the sun is up. Also overcast and windy days will extend these times, I have stayed out all night in summer and winter and have only caught the rare fish, mind you they seem to be larger. Having said that my largest walleye, 12.5lbs., was caught at about 3am trolling a smithwick rattlin rogue in about 6 feet of water off of Sherman's point. Largest winter walleye (6.5lbs.) was caught at about 6am in mid January up on Manitoulin Island, caught with a tiny jig and a 2 inch minnow, by the way this was caught in a lake where everyone told me there were very few walleye, can't say the lake name as I have been very happy to usually have the lake to myself when I fish there, not great numbers and I do get skunked as often as I catch fish but I have had several very memorable days there.

Thanks for the input. When I was out on Tuesday, I stayed til 7:00 PM and still had a few big fish coming in on the vexilar. Had I been a little warmer, I think I would have stayed (had wet sleeves from landing a big fish). One of these days I may try and stick it out for the evening. Probably just a matter of being on the right spot because I suspect there are still some active fish. When I do, I'll post my results.

I wonder if the walleye move into the shallow water at night to feed ?

Hi Don,
I'm not sure but I was out the last few nights thinking the same thing. I was fishing 10-12 feet of water and didn't get a bite. Maybe I have to try shallow 6-8'. I wish I knew the answer.. Goodluck this weekend.
