They’re very behind. Wouldn’t surprise me at all and you have to show proof of tax paid to avoid it.

There was a previous post about that a while ago. It might have been on another form.

Same deal, guy's were surprised about getting a bill years later. Really sucks when you don't expect or forgot about it.

I thought you had to pay the tax before you can transfer the ownership ?

Just a bit of food for thought: If that vessel came from Quebec, there is a possibility that maybe the party you bought it from didn't pay the tax because it went to a different province other than Quebec.

process is to mail in for the pleasure craft license and they assess the tax based on the receipt you provide and bill you for it. (Years later )

You pay tax on the trailer at time of registration at service Ontario.

Not as easy with newer equipment but a lot of older units just arent listed.

Bought and sold more than a few boats and only paid tax on 2. The latest, a late model, was from a dealership and the other was years after the fact for which I spoke to someone from rev can and we came to an agreement (peanuts)as the BOS was long gone. Trick is to get 3 seperately recepts. One for the trailer (MOT), one for the boat( Rev Can)and the other for the outboard ( All 3 for insurance)Worked for me so far. Private sales are the way to go. Besides, how many times does tax have to be paid on stuff sold many times over and we sweat to buy ? Seems like a racket to me.

3 separate receipts... register the trailer and pay the tax on that.
I never paid my tax on my used boat... filed everything rev. Can sent me... sped sending after around 5 yrs and 23yrs later have no intention on paying it.
Gov gets more than enough of our money !!
If you buy from dealer... SH1t out of luck.

I got dinged twice the same way. Both times the Tax Threat came in the mail 3 years after purchasing the boat. Good thing I kept the receipts! Paid the peanuts and forgot about the Tax Man.

It happened to me recently for a boat I bought 4 years ago and sold last summer.
I was in the process of cleaning out my files and shredding documents .. thankfully I am a procrastinator and hadn't gotten around to shredding it yet.

Happened to me as well about 3 or 4 years after I paid the tax, sent them a copy of my tax receipt along with a little note saying to get their crap together with service Ontario and stop trying to rip people off. This was about 8 years ago so I guess they are still trying to rip people off that can't prove they paid it. I was given 3 receipts 1 for the boat, one for the trailer and one for the motor... which was the most valuable of the three.

X2, good thing I still had the receipt proving I'd payed the taxes 2 years prior.

Same thing happened to me last year. I thought it was odd as I purchased from a dealer and it was 5 year ago so obviously tax was paid. But they are demanding proof of purchase and tax for every watercraft purchased. They are trying to catch guys selling privately and writing up two receipts giving buddies breaks or getting better deals for consumer. Also back tracking making sure dealers and brokers aren't pocketing the taxes. Always keep every receipt and copy of every thing you purchase to cover your behind.

I just got a letter from the Ministry of Finance about taxes on a boat I bought 3 years ago in March of 2015 that I bought privately.

I registered the trailer at the MTO and did not pay tax on that. But I did apply for a Pleasure Craft Licence transfer to my name and in the application I had to send in a copy of the bill of sale, Photo I.D and the application.

At the bottom of the application it says that the information collected in this application may be used to enforce any law in Canada including
the "requirement to pay Provincial Sales Tax" among other things.

I had all the paper work so I was able to go back and see what was done, I had sent in the bill of sale with the application for the licence transfer so I have to now pay tax on that amount.

I think the reason I got this letter is because of the Licence transfer application.

Do you guys who got this letter remember if you had applied for a Boat licence with Transport Canada?

Thanks

I had a call as well.
The insulting tone of voice changed quick when I said that I was going to fax a copy to the office and note how enjoyable the conversation with Mr "I remembered his name" was.
There is no reason for them to be rude and accusatory.
