Hi All;

I know there are some professionals on this board and was wondering what their preference was for downrigger weight/type was for various applications?

I have a new boat with riggers and am looking at various weights from torpedos to cannon balls but was wondering what you all use for various depths. I am fairly new to downrigging but was considering going with Torpedo diver downrigger weights, set of 2 x 12lb and 2 x 16 lb for various depths. I want to use these on my new cannon stx-ts mag 10 riggers but don't have any experience with them yet. Anyone with experience with these weights can chime in or alternatives ? I am trying to reduce blow back at some deeper depths or 100'+ if required.

I figured 12lb torpedos for 80' and up and 16lb for 80' and deeper.

any thoughts ?
thanks pros !

With those riggers you can run anything up to 20b. Anything in the 15-17lb are a good overall size. I say those sizes because I sell those but any make of that approx size should be good. Again I am partial to Shark weights.

Thanks OrangePeal, can you elaborate ? you sell them , where can i buy ?

I know from reviews that the sharks are highly touted, but was leaning towards Torpedos. Have you run torpedo divers weights and have any info on blowback vs the sharks ?

thnx again

The sharks are very good and I have friends that swear by them and won’t use anything else. I use the 16lb torpedos and have nothing but good things to say about them. Whatever you go with I would say buying 2x12 and 2x16 is a waste of money and storage space in the boat. I’d only buy the 16’s. They will do everything the 12’s will do and more.

Buy yourself a pair of 16lb sharks and Scotty rigger snubbers. And a set of blacks releases for them. You will be happy with that setup. In the spring in skinny water run lighter weights as there’s no need for big heavy weights.

Thanks for the help on this... i am going to order 2 x 12 lb and 2 x 16 lb weights, just in case. I also picked up some chamberlain releases from Keith Chamberlain in Vermont. I heard they were pretty good releases.

Do you guys use snubbers on the ball ?

Hey Biff,

You have it correct. I fish 12s down to 80' or 90' and 15 to 16 pound weights deeper than 90'.
The bigger the profile the greater the chance of spooking the fish. I prefer as small as possible. As far as blow back goes I have learned to deal with it. I tip the transducer to mark the weights. I run 2 transducers at different angles so I can switch from one transducer to the other depending on speed and amount of blow back. Sharks, Torpedoes and Slim Darters are all good weights.
We only run snubbers on the high speed riggers like the Scotty HPs. Releases - I prefer the Scottys because of the high current areas around the Bonnet shoals.. Chamberlains and Blacks are both good.

Trannyman; I trying to source these torpedo diver weights 2 x 12 and 2 x 16. Their main site has them but seem to be more expensive than the odd one i have seen on shelves. Do you have a source to purchase these locally in quinte ? I was thinking of calling reel thing and seeing if they can order, but i don't think they are open.

Also, i have a Pro V with cisco rails mounted direct to gunnel. I will run 2 x mag 10 stx-ts; Do you feel backing plates are necessary for rails ? Cisco has backing plates for their rails, but fitter said there was 1/2" backing and would be solid enough. Any suggestions? i am worried that 16LB weights with telescopic extension on riggers will put strain on gunnel.

As always, i appreciate your opinion !
thanks
B
