Given all the chaos happening on the bay with Bass Champs on saturday and the Quinte Fishing series on Sunday I elected to steer clear of the bay and head out to lake ont. Was launched by 6 and first thing that was noted was the water temp. it was only 54 degrees, pretty darn cold. I didn't know what to expect with that temp. Headed to the first spot and my friend Tim and his wife were with me and they have never fished the clear waters of lake O and were they ever surprised how deep down you can see. On his first cast of the day a monster 6.1 lb smallmouth. The rest of the morning we caught fish here and there but they weren't aggressive by any means. Only saw a few fish small males guarding nests and it quickly became apparent they were in prespawn mode.
Most of the morning it was nice with a thin cloud covering and low winds so very comfortable to fish. By 11 pm the sun came out and the fish moved up. Schools of fish roaming in packs but very finicky but within a short time they started biting and we boated between 3 of us over 50 fish . Most were small but every once in a while fish between 3-5 lbs would bite. The most enjoyable part for me was how thrilled the couple with me were at catching so many fish. they had perma-grins on their faces all day. We wrapped up about 2 pm and hit the cold brown pops after that.
