Fished out of Deseronto last week with no luck except for perch (just like many other folks). Fishing was really good a year ago. Last week we encountered a lot of bright green algae fouling our lures. It seemed more than usual. Does this indicate some excusion in water quality (like a fertilizer spill somewhere)? Anyone else have similar observations?

I had same issue, wasn't as much around the first week of season and the bite was slowly warming up, cold front n snow put a stop to that, Last Monday there was lots of decent size marks on bottom in Mohawk bay 14-16 FOW, not much algae but no biters either
I even tried matching the hatch so to speak,
Chartreuse Blade, beads and twister tail, that didn't work either.
I found it mostly on or close to bottom, bouncer would run 10 minutes and come up with attached strands, When boat numbers were down I long lined a worm-harness, less algae and a few more perch, white bass n pike, Walter again stayed away.
Lilacs are finally in bloom perhaps that's what we have needed to turn them on?

I was just telling a buddy that I've heard, when the lilacs are in bloom, the walleye are suppose to be on the bite. :-)

Not sure if it's true but is an excuse when not catching.
