So when I bought my first spinning reel back in the late 50's I put a pencil through the spool and wound the line on the reel. Later I was told to lay the spool flat on the floor label up and wind the line a few turns give a bit of slack if the line dosen't twist continue if it twists turn the spool over and continue.
I just bought a new Diawa spinning reel and in the instructions they show line coming off a flat spool with an X through it and say to spool like I did back in the 50's with the line coming from the bottom of the spool .If the spool is on a horizontal axle what is the difference if the line comes off the top or the bottom of the spool.

I'm sure you could go on Utube and find 100 videos with the spool flat.
My son in law throws the spool in a bucket of water or over the side of the boat and winds on his line

What am I saying #*^@ed if I know, what are your thoughts.

I hold the spool beside my reel so that the line comes off the spool the same direction it goes on the reel. I do it at the top on both. Then I lay the spool on the floor and use my non winding hand to keep tension on the line while I wind the line on the reel.

I give it a couple of turns and then let the pressure off, The line should lay in loose loops and not twist. If it twist the I flip the spool over and continue.

Not too scientific, but it work for me.

Here's two links for calculating line backing which is kind of important for casting performance and will also save you money if your using braided line.

I've used these and they work great. I use Berkley Big Game for backing, real cheap and easy to find at CTC. I have a 100' tape and lay it out on the driveway for measuring the backing. Someday I'll get a line counter.
