At least it was a beauty day to be on the lake. Didn't mark much . Started in the gap and worked out to the bar and also tried somewhat west of the gap. Water temp was mid to high 30s. A few bugs clouds about but bearable.

I'm curious about marking lake trout. I've been out a half dozen times in the past two years. I've marked a few fish in the gap, but Ive never marked fish out in the lake, even when I'm catching them.
I'm thinking my sonar isn't set right for the deeper water.
Any info would be appreciated.

This time of year the water temperature is the same from top to bottom so if the fish are suspended high they will be outside of your cone angle. At 50 feet your cone diameter is only 17.5 feet and at 80 feet only 28 feet in diameter. Given the ultra clear water I would suspect the fish are not directly under your boat. We marked a lot of fish yesterday in deep water belly to the bottom they almost look like rocks we call them turtles. Sonar can mark these on bottom but they are actually a foot or so off bottom. If your marking bottom you should mark anything between it and your transducer unless your sensitivity is turned down. The clear water is probably the reason many are having success with long lines leadcore and boards.

That's very helpful. I was marking the bumps on the bottom that show slight separation with the DI. Thanks for the info.
