Night fishing

Just wondering if anyone does any night fishing, and if so, what are some general areas you target and what methods do you use?? Not asking for exact locations or the GPS coordinates to your honey hole (although we will accept them), but just want to know if other areas are worth the try. Myself and the others in our crew tend to fish the docks and shoreline by the Marina. We usually fish from just before sunset to 11pm-2am, depending on how the fishing is. We’re just looking for a change and wondering what other places there are to fish at night and what methods are used. Thanks in advance for info.

We lived for ten years in AmherstBURG ON, right on The Detroit River. Arguably the second-best Wallie Fishing in Ontario - you know where #1 is.

No exaggeration, Night Fishing was what we did most. Better results, COOLER in Summer, and much SAFER conditions. Can't help you out with conditions here, cuz we're 76 yrs old and no longer active in that manner. However, you can't beat Shorelines anywhere, or where Shorelines match up against Deep Water with current.

We WISH more Folks here tried it, becuz results are - in our opinion - far better, with bigger Fish.

FWIW: we have one tackle box jam-packed with nothing but long, thin Pencil Baits that fish 1'-2' deep. That's what produced the most Fish.

Thanks for the input, WORDPECKER. My wife’s grandfather got me into walleye fishing about 10 years ago, and myself and the other family members always enjoyed night fishing, especially up the shore lines and around the cement factory. He was at Pickeral Park for many years and was making the trip from Pennsylvania to Canada for over 60 years. He told more stories about fishing than i can remember.
Anyway, We tend to throw rapalas, SmithwickS and bombers (floating up to 8’) until our arms fall off. We’ve hit our limit more nights than we can count. It’s peaceful, hardly any boats to contend with, and we tend to have better luck. We’re hoping to yield the same results we have been having over the past few years.

Lots of areas to fish. The whole long reach high bluff area, Shermans, Thompsons and many more.

In Amherstburg, we would anchor just off the Upbound Channel of the Seaway, and cast into the (30`) deeper stuff, letting the Stick Baits drift from Deep into the Shallows. As mentioned above, also seeing plenty of use were long Rapalas, Smithwicks, Bombers, etc., just under the surface. The reaction hits were hard to believe, and consistent. Pulling some of the Big Girls back to the boat was not easy against the 3-5 knot currents.

You ALWAYS had to pay attention Downriver. At any moment a Thousand Footer could come boiling up the Channel, trailing a surge wave anywhere from 3`- 5`high. If the anchor got stuck, it was time to cut the rope IN A HURRY. Nothing easily beats the thrill of having a gigantic Thousand Foot Freighter blow by you, close enough to almost touch its side, while some deckhand leans over yelling encouragements such as: `What were you THINKING, you A-hole.`

Troll or cast pick your favorite. I primarily troll but like to cast points, around the shoals and areas that just look fishy

Heading up to the Hay Bay/Long Reach area on Thursday and staying for 5 days. Hoping for some nice weather. Since I am from out of the area, can anyone provide me with 7-day forecast or provide me with some websites to use. I’ve been checking WINDFINDER and WEATHER NETWORK, and both are showing rain for Saturday and nice weather for Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday. I don’t mind the rain but don’t want to deal with high winds.

The Weather Network has a nifty 'Hourly' feature that gives Time when Precip is 'expected', and how big a chance rain will fall. There's a 'Radar' feature too, which lets you interpret percentage.

We find this info priceless, and 'usually' reliable.~

Just to follow up: we had a rather successful trip to the BOQ this past weekend and earlier this week. Most of our success came in the evening and nighttime. We generally casted a variety of colors of Suspending Smithwicks (0-6 ft.) into shore and limited out all but one night (4 in the boat). We had success at the Wall (and cove) to the left of the cement factory and along the shoreline in Long Reach (closer to Sherman’s than Huff’s). The fish ranged in size from 2-6 lbs. It was a consistent bite every night from 8:00-11:00. Then they turned off.
Most of our fish came at night, but some came during the day. mostly used worm harnesses and bottom bouncers. Rams island produced a few fish but you have to sift through the small eyes to get the keepers. We generally keep 18-26 inches. Saw a lot of other boats with their nets in the water. Noticed that many of them keep the smaller fish and that had us scratching our head. Wouldn’t you want to toss a 14 inch walleye back to grow for next year?? We saw one boat that was keeping a dozen or so that were small enough that they didn’t even use a net. That’s just plain greed. Oh well. Rant over. The fishing is hot right now. Get out and get fishing. They're hungry.

Wish you Guys would quit messing with 'em, and shoo the Herd up the Bay to the North/West end.

Our Neighbour - who's a bloody good Fisherman - has a grand total of ONE Wallie to date since May 6!!

Obviously the high water level is affecting our Area (said the Guy who can't even Launch yet!!), but at this stage we should be seeing a lot more action than what's happened so far.

We're hoping to get out early tomorrow in Baby Boat for a brief run, drag a Blk/Chrome Hot'nTot for a while... and luck out just enough to feed Two Olde Pharts in the Evening.

Just send us a few, Folks. We don't want to be greedy.~
