Hello Walleye Anglers,

For those who I haven’t met yet, I am the new Assessment Biologist at the Lake Ontario Management Unit. I had the pleasure of working with Jim Hoyle prior to his retirement and I am trilled to carry on LOMUs efforts in monitoring the Bay of Quinte Walleye and Fish Community.

I am seeking your help with our 2019 Volunteer Angler Diary Program (Walleye). If you would like to participate this year, please respond to this email and let me know. For those of you that respond, I will send out a Diary in the mail shortly. If you are already fishing, please let me know and I’ll send you a diary right away. If you know of an avid Walleye angler that may not have participated in past years, please pass along this email and encourage them to contact me.

This year, in addition to Bay of Quinte anglers, I am encouraging anglers that fish for Walleye in eastern Lake Ontario and the upper St. Lawrence River to participate in this volunteer diary program.

If you have not seen Jim’s report on the 2018 diary program, it can be found in our 2018 Annual Report, Section 2.3 (available online at: http://www.glfc.org/loc_mgmt_unit/).

Your help is appreciated.

UPDATES FOR 2019:

For your interest, I have attached a “postcard” describing our work to track Walleye movement in the Bay of Quinte and eastern Lake Ontario using acoustic telemetry technology. This is a partnership project with Queen’s University Freshwater Fisheries Conservation Lab. So far in 2017, 2018 and 2019 we have tagged over 200 walleye. If you catch one of our acoustic tagged walleye, please consider releasing the fish and report back to us. The battery life of the acoustic tags is 5 years. A report on the acoustic telemetry project can be found in our 2018 Annual Report, Section 9.16 and 9.17 (available online at: http://www.glfc.org/loc_mgmt_unit/).
I am also conducting an open-water angler survey this season. The survey began on May 4th 2019 and will run until December 2019. If you encounter MNRF field crews during your fishing trips, your participation is greatly appreciated. Attached is a brief description of the survey and results from Walleye opening weekend. A report on the last time this survey was conducted can be found in our 2017 Annual Report, Section 2.2 (available online at: http://www.glfc.org/loc_mgmt_unit/).

Thank you very much.

Erin
