Proposed Bass Fishing Season Changes Fisheries Mgmt Zone 20

At the COLA Swap Show on Saturday, I had a chance to meet Erin Brown from Fisheries Management, who was there with a display regarding potential changes to the Bass Fishing Season.

With all the Bass Anglers on the board, I thought we may have seen a discussion of the season changes.

The changes are all based on the research showing the fish haven't finished spawning as they did in the past.

Bass isn't my targeted species, so the rule changes will have little impact on my fishing.

I would definitely have to agree that the fish are spawning later than the past few years. I never fish shallow and target spawners or post spawn males guarding fry. The bigger females are usually at first drop and ready to eat anyway. I think the high water may have something to do with this. With the high water levels the water doesn't warm up as much? Last spring was really quite cool and rainy until June so this also may have played a part in this. I am by no way a ecosystem specialist but just my observations living on the bay close to a large spawning area and lots of hours on the water. If u do fish shallow for vaulnerable bass this time of year , please get them back in the water asap!

My input my personal self is just open it. A lot of anglers do not eat bass which I am one of them. Just target for sport. And definitely a season of just catch and release I do enjoy but I also do that anyway. That’s my opinion.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) and FMZ 20 stakeholder advisory groups are encouraging the public to provide feedback on proposed changes to the regular season and the early season angling options for bass in FMZ 20. Please send comments on our proposal for the:

FMZ 20 regular season for bass
early season angling options
Comments will be received until March 31.
