How old were you when you took that photo :?:

Does the current in the canal flow east or west all winter long I was surprised to see it wide open any time I drove across.

My dad was just a twinkle in his dad's eye when that was taken. It flows west for the most part all year round. It was flowing east Wednesday and Thursday but back to West now. Access to the road on the north side was closed off this week, too many a-holes dumping garbage along it.

Interesting Pic. Too bad we couldn't pop back in time and see how some of these structures were built.

I don't have any old fishing pictures but here's a few pictures of Foresters Island off Deseronto. The Orphanage was at the west end. All gone except for some concrete pads of out buildings.

The Picnic picture is the east end of Foresters. When the water is clear in the early spring you can still see the cribbing timbers about 3 ft underwater.
There still some foundations and a sidewalk along the shore.

The last picture is one on the wharf's at Deseronto looking towards Foresters Island.

Not one person in the Picnic photo is wearing a life jacket...LOL

Those are some great pictures of yesteryear. I am sure it was interesting times, but I don't understand the reason for the orphanage being segregated to the island.
Foresters Island; is this named after the philanthropy club?

After asking the question, I decided to do a little research. Very interesting bio of the Dr. and the I.O. F. which lead to the orphanage being built.

Deseronto has a great archive. If your interested, Google Deseronto Archive and then click on the Flickr link, then go into the albums.
Lots for great pictures on the area including the Royal Canadian Flying Corp base that was on Deseronto Road just north of town.
It's hard to imagine the industry that was on the Deseronto shoreline at one time.

That was an interesting read. I wonder why it was completely torn down.

My guess would be a disaster such as fire....but that's only a guess.

Great looking facility though. How many of us would have loved to live and play in your own FORT?....
I am not looking at this through the eyes of an 8 year old orphaned boy though.

Here's the story and a few more pictures. I've walked the island numerous times and other that a bit of broken concrete and a few sheets of tin, there's nothing left.

It's a shame it was only in operation as an orphanage for just 18 months. Closed in 1907 and then the buildings were torn down when the property sold in 1921.

The Big Smoke is not alone when it comes to the history of Ontario. There is an awful lot of history belonging to small towns everywhere as well.
