Got out for some bassin yesterday morning in the bay. The water was flat calm, clear as you could ask for and temp 77, and some beautiful clean cabbage. All this spells fishing slow around the weeds with soft plastics or jigs. Well i fished the plastics and such for almost an hour with only late charges by perch. I even seen 2 nice largemouth swim past the boat. Kinda flustered I opened up the crankbait box and tied on a squarebill. In less than 10 casts I had my first fish and the bite continued for another 2 hours , working a 200yard stretch. After the bite slowed I switched up to a 5" swimbait and popped the biggest of the day at close to 5. I had another 4 pounder on the squarebill. So I guess my lesson learnt was, sometimes you have to go against everything your taught and let mother nature teach you.

We used to fish a small back lake on a regular basis and always came home with a feed. Surface lures on a weed line and senkos on a dropoff. Fishing it one day and skunked for the first time we were waiting for a turn at the launch and throwing into a shallow spot next to the launch we had never considered. My son caught a nice smallmouth that we would have released since it was our only one but it had badly swallowed the bait and wouldn't survive. My son opened it up to see what was in it's belly, full of crayfish. We had never noticed crayfish before. We both put on a Red Rebel Crayfish and long story short had four fish over three pounds in less than half an hour. Guess it just goes to prove that's why we carry that big tackle bag with dozens of different lures even if we only tend to use the same one or two all the time.
