I was able to choose a day to work (Friday or Saturday) and since today's winds were looking better, I went out with my Dad to Waupoos. We headed out early while it was still dark and made our way to Green Island. Even though the wind was light, there were some rollers from the east. We trolled around for an hour and picked up a pike and smallmouth bass. I think we were hitting some smallmouth because my Dad kept getting taps but not hook ups as we made our pass.
My Dad wasn't really enjoying himself in the front bobbing up and down so we headed to the shelter of Waupoos Island and cast around a bit (and my Dad lost his phone hanging over the boat trying to snag a lure that I lost on a cast, oops). I had a few hits but couldn't keep one on. Trolled south side of Waupoos Island and the water was settling down so went back out to Green Island but nothing. Rough day as I wanted to to get my Dad some fish because he doesn't come out very often.
There were several boats out, which was a little suprising I thought being a Friday.
When things aren't going well, how long do you usually stay with a lure before switching to different colour or depth? 20 min? 60?
Also, do you stick with a depth even if not marking a lot of fish? We weren't marking much in 20-25 but landed the pike and smallmouth on the first pass. Then, we went out deeper once (35 ft) we marked more but didn't get any.
