So...im out on the big lake chasing for the elusive (very) Walleye and on the way in get stopped by the RCMP ( on a Tuesday afternoon late Oct) does the usuall safety check then starts asking me about my lifejackets, asking how many, i point out the inflatable hanging on my seat, the inflatable my guest is wearing and that i have 3 other inflatable in the front hatch. He askes me if i am aware they are to be worn and i reply i was aware, he then points out im not wearing one to which i reply i was wearing a Mustang floater suit to which he replies...i have never seen one of those. I show him the credentials of the suit and it was all good. Seemed a bit bizarre. So now i will wear my inflatable over my floater suit just in case. .....kidding of course

Jim, I am pretty sure the MNR and OPP are aware of the rules. Canadian Coast guard approved Inflatables and survival suits are acceptable as long as they are always worn. You can always cover yourself by also having extra suitably sized lifejackets in your lockers. They don’t need to be worn. Stupid rules. If a lifejacket or floater suit is only US approved then they are probably not acceptable. BATMAN

They typically don’t bother fisherman and hunters, just drug dealers. BATMAN

No...they were out in their zodiak, and they are the RCMP, they have jurisdiction anywhere in Canada.I have had a Mustang floater suit for 40 years and they are approved. I agree the lifejacket rules are ridiculous, it's ok to have lifejackets in a hatch in the boat but you can't have the inflatables sitting right beside you. I actually thought he was kidding me when he said he wasn't aware of the suit. I have 140 YouTube videos and in everyone we are all wearing our PFD. They were out on a Tuesday afternoon in late October, there wasn't a lot of pleasure boaters out there haha, first time i have been stopped by the RCMP and i am out a lot ...

Just sayin', BUT we're disturbed to see such stupidity displayed by our beloved RCMP.

Dunno what he was trying to prove, unless you had somebody with you who looked like a raw recruit.

Either way it definitely does NOT create a great impression.

Sorry you had to experience that, Jim.

I'm surprised he wasn't wearing one

I have been asked for proof of insurance ( which I had ) even tho you are not required to have insurance in Ontario.

Been asked of proof of where we launched although never seen anyone at the launch giving out slips

Would have told him to get back in his cruiser but didn't need any further hassle.

I often wear a US approved PDF because its more comfortable than the one in the locker

CHECK THE DATES ON THE INFLATABLES ARMING CYLINDER THEY EXPIRE ALSO YOUR FLARES

My nephew was fishing this summer, was checked by the OPP they fined him 180 dollars for not wearing his inflatable Pfd, he had no other life jackets in the boat. The PDF was on the back of his boat seat. That was a big fine for a young kid. I thought that was really unnecessary.

Unfortunately they take the role of enforcement more than education too often. They would have been better served to educate and warn. Especially with a confusing regulation like that one.

It makes zero sense that you can store regular pfd’s in a closed hatch and not have to wear them but an inflatable has to be worn.

Nobody is allowed on my boat without wearing theirs anyways (auto-Inflates).

OPP and game warden pulled me over two weeks ago on lake north of Kingston. First solo in my new boat and was on my way in at the dock and only one there so they went through everything. Very pleasant but elderly OPP lady officer was trying to tell me my flares were outdated. ( sept. 2020) told her they are now four years from production date and not an expiry date to which she was adamant I was wrong. Luckily C.O. Chimed in to educate her on this! All in all very pleasant and to be honest she looked like a retired OPP officer who maybe works part time a couple of days a week to occomidate the CO. I was wearing my inflatable and they never asked to even see another life jacket even though I did show them while going through all the other stuff. All in all a good experience and nice to see them out on the water.

Excellent point made there about the education over enforcement. Some of them don't know the rules as well as they should.... ( but not Bill Robertson) haha

So can they give you a ticket if your flares are out of Date?
