I'm trying to get a better setup this year for walleye and curious what others may recommend please.

I've been looking for a snap-weight system and am considering buying just the snap clips from Amazon and the weights separately but there's a huge difference in prices for just the snaps so not sure what to get.

Is there anything you would suggest; even a MacGyver system?

Thanks

Well that's a lot better and cheaper.

Thanks SuperDad.

Superdad's post looks like a decent DIY option. I run the Offshore Snap Weights, but they are a bit pricey, but never lost one. I at times also run 2 or 3 colours of lead core, Torpdeo divers, mini dipsey divers and 100-150 foot sections of copper line to give me a bit more depth.

Www.wingitfishing.com i have used these for years. I do use the small red Offshore on them. The Offshore kit is crazy.

Thanks Jim.

I now have a lead core setup and will try that along with the weights and dipseys.

I had a set of yellow bird boards but loaned them to someone a long time ago and not sure who. I may buy some new ones to allow 4 lines in the boat.

The only issues with lead core is that if you are using a lot of colours out is it way behind your boat with decreases your maneuverability, especially when Quinte gets busy and packed with boats. That is why I usually only use my set ups with 2 or 3 colours to a few few extra feet of depth, not 10 colours of core like I use for salmon on Lake O or Lake Erie summer walleye.

For dipseys I do not use very often, and they take you bait down deep quick with minimal line out which is great, also means the fish come up fast, so if caught deep and reeled in quick they may be bloated a bit when you land them. So don't do too deep.

I love my 20 pound test walleye copper sinks more than lead core so do not need too much out.

Best of luck.

I have been using the Blood Run Walleye Copper for years ,deadly on Erie, works well for the Lake Ontario lakers in the spring and the Lake Ontario Walleye. Be good if you didnt tell to many people about it. Lets keep it a secret

Sorry I guess cat's out of the bag. Hopefully not too many read the post. It is definitely deadly on Erie that is my main use for it. No good at all on Quinte though.

I use OR16 clips with trolling weights in 1/2 ounce increments, all purchased separately. I initially bought a kit but the clips that came with the kit had no keeper pin and would slip off too easily and I lost most of them in the lake. The OR16 clips work flawlessly. I have never lost a weight attached with one of these clips.

More recently I discovered these "Cabela's Advanced anglers pressure lock snap with weights" and they are awesome. I bought some at Bass Pro in Vaughan Mills. The snaps engage and disengage with ease and when engaged they hold the line really well. These are the best snap weights I have tried to date. They had limited stock where I purchased them but it looks like the various increments of weight are available if you order them online.

So....i had a ton of the smaller offshore clips (Red,Black,Orange) that were before the red ones with the pins. So i drilled them all out and cut some weed wacker line and epoxed the pins in place, work great for the snap weights. The Offshore kits are crazy expensive but they use bismuth instaed of lead. I have covered all my lead weights with the spray in box liner that you can get at some of the auto parts stores. As shown you can buy those "torpedo " shaped sinkers way cheaper and they work well .

Wow! This is a lot of information and is very appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Now I have to learn lead core and when you say 4 colours, do you also use a leader line like braid, fluro or mono?

As far as lead goes, it’s not really that much more line out than the snap program. Lots of guys run 150-200 feet out with weights where as 5 colours is 150 feet.

5 colours with a reef 800 is pretty deep. It’s also a different action. Snap weights won’t affect the snake through the water like lead does. But for long straight trolls both are similar.

Just don’t pull those 50-60 or more marks boys. They will not release a lot of the time. Protect the future.

Thanks Big Mac.

I'll for sure be mindful and will probably only use a snap weight system or flat line without and Reef Runners.

I've always been more for jigging but hoping to get my boat prepped for any type of trolling.

Cheers
