Hi forum,

Just wondering if anyone has any line specs (diameter) on some of the more popular lead core in the market....Would like to spool up for this fall probably with the 18lb test line but am not sure if my SG47 line counter is big enough. Any comments relating to equipment much appreciated.

I use 28# Core alot, the 47 will hold 8 colors with backing,I have Okuma 45's which hold 10 colors. If you want to run segmented rigs,smaller Diawa 27 will hold 4 colors with backing. In the fall,I run mostly 3,4 and 5 colors segmented on 6 rods. roughrider

I run 5 colours of 18lb Cortland on Diawa LC 27s with 300 ft of fireline backing.

Thanks Roughrider and Eye Tracker for your responses...Looks like I may even be able to used my old Bantam line counter to convert over , otherwise a shopping I will go ! Hmmmm...How many LC's does a guy need ?

Just wondering if either of you fine gentlemen would be willing to share your obtained depths with your respective lead core sizes. According to the Precision Trolling Guide guys and the 'Big Water Edition' depths of 36 ft with 5 colors of 18# are attainable and 33 ft with 5 colors of 27#, both at 2 mph.They don't say however if there is any line out behind the lead nor how much of a leader they are running. Also no mention of lure type or size.
My thinking is, if I run the heavier 27# test I can use the same set up for salmon and walleye.

Any feedback would be much appreciated and most certainly reciprocated with my own experience on the pond once I'm set up.

Those depths sound deeper than my findings. Water temp affects depth,colder water in late fall is heavier,meaning lead rides higher. I find at that speed of 2.0,4 to 5 ft per color is my experience. I run 60ft. leaders of Power Pro. You can figure depth with lure charts,see what your leader alone gets,then add depth per color. roughrider

At a trolling speed of 1.8 mph I have found about the same as roughrider...each colour will get you down about 5 to 6 feet with the 18lb core.

I just picked up a new Okuma Convector 30 and a full core of 27lb kerplunk. I figure I should be good to go with 5 colors on this set up and perhaps 3 colors on my Bantam LC. By the way JB's in Rexdale are selling out the previous model of Convectors for $69. I purchased a the newer generation 'lefty' from John at Tightlines for $99. Both great spots for your Big Water needs.

Congrats on the reels. I own several Okumas in Convector and SD models. The SD model has an excellent drag for trolling Eyes.You can run Church Walleye Boards with straight core,no need to segment,saves on multiple rod set-ups.I would spool at least 5 to 7 colors on. I picked the Okuma's up off of Ebay new,roughrider

Hi Roughrider,

You say the Church's boards can be run directly to the lead core...What releases are you running and how are they different from the off shore releases. I have read it's not recommended to hook up directly to the lead.

The Church boards come with an adjustable release and ballast weight,you can run superlines or core in the clips,I hav'nt had a problem with break-offs yet. I keep mine tight and take them off at the boat. Lots of salmon guys are now running church/core rigs for salmon roughrider

Hi Guys,

Parky here again.

I need some help with proper joining methods for lead to mono. I've been told to remove approx 7 to 8 inches of lead from the surrounding cover, loop an open knot close to the lead and then slide the mono into the cover until it meets the lead. At this point slide the open knot down the covered mono and pull tight. Sounds kinda crazy and insecure to me. How do you guys secure your lines ?

Say Roughrider...Do you break out/of some of the lead and ty to the outer sheathing or do you ty to the lead?

I tie the lead,although you probably could remove the lead also and lose the bulky knot. roughrider
