Hey everyone!

Just started to get into trolling with lead core and just wondering what people out there do out there - specifically with lead core and planer boards.
Be gracious to me...but I've only got one trolling rod and reel with 10 colours of lead core on it. I would like to clip it to planer boards but have heard that its hard on both the lead core and the lead core drags the planer board down.

I've read that people segment their leadcore into sections (ie. 3 colours, 5 colours...etc) but not really sure how that works. Do you segment it with a 10 foot section of mono between colours?

Or do most of you that troll with a number of lines with lead core just have multiple reels with different amounts of colours of lead core on them and you just let all the colours out on those reels till you hit your backing?

Hopefully this is all making sense.
I thought I would ask the pro's and see what you guys do before I start cutting up my lead core into sections. haha.

Thanks

I am no pro lol but....

I have two 10 colour leadcore set ups both are split. One is 5 colours plus 5 colours, so can run as a 5 colour or 10 colour, and my other one is a 7+3, so I can run as 7 colours or 10 colours. I add in a 10 foot section of 25-30 mono between the splits for my 27 pound leadcore set ups, so I do not have to clip the boards on the core.

I use a willis knot to connect the leadcore and the mono, never had an issues, works great!!

I also have a couple 5 colours (3 colour + 2 colour split).

I love using the split leadcore saves buying more rod combos and saves space in my boat.

I use a 10 color set up, i do not "segment " my line. I also don't fish core off my boards, there are enough options for getting board lines down. You are right about the segment, some have 3 or 5 color and then a mono or braid back to the reel. I have never seen anyone segment and have lead between the board and reel as i would think the board wouldn't like the extra weight. The reason for me is the versatility rather than carrying more rods and reels.

I don't have a lot of experience but my one set up I often run in the summer for high running salmon or rainbows is my split 10 colour with only 5 colours in the water off the yellow Offshore board running spoons or smaller flasher/fly combos.... lure and 5 colours in the water they usually 100 feet of line out between the board and the rod, which is the extra leadcore not in the water. The board still runs fine, I just have the rod holder tilted up a bit higher and pay extra attention when making turns so the leadcore between the rod and board does not dip into the water when I turn towards the board. Not an ideal set up, but my boat is small with limited storage space and saved some money on rod/reel combos. That said I just got some "new to me trolling combos so I will probably switch unsegmented 10 colour for next year.
