I always find identifying fish conversations interesting. Recently I fished a small lake that was said by locals where I live, while working in the west to contain rainbows. Other locals said Cutthroat trout. So....I had been curious. (1.5 hrs. east of Vancouver)

I ended up catching a sample specimen (released). It had the stripe of a rainbow, but the oranges slashes under the gillplate of a cutthroat trout. It looks like both groups of locals were partially right. In my experience, opinion I had caught a cutbow. This is where the two species had cross bred.

Taking it in a different direction, I recall years ago fishing the Bath Hydro plant and seeing some very, very large fish. I had to watch and watch them, until I realized that they were carp and not anything else. It was tough to tell with the current, but eventually I was able to make out the large scales and small barbs by their mouths.

Years before that as a child we fished a small trout stream and caught after a great deal of time and trouble some nice trout....lol. It turns out they were a nice looking ....but large chub, with a colouration remotely similar to a young boy getting used to fishing for my cold water friends.

On the Bay of Quinte I have heard of Blue Pickeral (walleye) from a small bay near Thompsons Point. I have yet to see a specimen, but found the story an interesting one as it is easy to get fish mixed up within some familys like walleye.

How about anyone else? Any identification notes, stories? Just curious what is out there.

Can't say I've caught a Blue Pickerel on Quinte.

I have however caught them in Northern Quebec on a few trips :!:

I was with a buddy that caught a blue pickeral in Kapuskasing last year. It was blue. Something about the dark waters of the north making them appear blue. Never heard of one caught in Quinte. Going out fishing in Brighton Bay this Sunday with a buddy from work. If I don't get me a snack of fish, I'll be blue.
