I have been seeing a Iot of Gar Pike breaching the surface and generaIIy gathering in some pretty Iarge numbers. The fish aIways seem to stop biting when these guys are around....anyone have any info on these things? Do the other fish go into hiding when these bad boys show up?

Iast night the surface was boiIing with them in the Trent river. Are they spawning at this time?

Great fish to play with if you are wanting to try. A yarn fly or yarn-tipped lure is the bait you want. Take a lure and add a bucktail of yarn or if a fly fisher use a yarn fly. The gar will grab your bait and 75% of the time you do not hook but you will catch them with their teeth caught on the yarn. My favorites are red or white yarn or a combo of red and white. Just saying

P.S. watch the teeth they will cut you easier than a pike or musky.

Just be careful how you grab them; tend to be pretty slimy, IF we recall correctly. It's been a long time.

Not sure we'd want to try eating one. They also do tend to mass together, and it's quite a sight.
