Hello everyone. I'm new to using snap weights. I have seen people use them in the fall for walleye and am just wondering if they are primarily used in conjunction with spoons, or will they work with crankbaits as well? I primarily run reef runners and tail dancers, but would like to try some spoons in the mix as well and only have one reel with leadcore on it. Also, is the first weekend of November a good time to start this year or with the warm weather, will they be later coming in?

You can use snap weights with cranks. I wouldn’t personally target deeper than 35-40’ though as you will likely not be able to release them effectively. If you plan to keep your catch than fill your boots although I wouldn’t do that with trophy fish.

Offshore tackle promotes a 50+2 method which involves letting your bait out 50’, clipping a 2 oz snap on and then letting out more line to achieve certain depths.

Reefs and TD’s will achieve 28-30’ without weights though so you don’t necessarily need a snap. Usually the most active fish are the highest.

Thank you big mac. I never target walleye in any less than 35', was just curious how using the weights would affect say a less deep diving crankbait than RR or tail dancers can achieve. Are these weights ok to use behind planer boards as well?

Yes they are good to use behind boards. I’d suggest looking at the precision trolling data app. It gives specific dive curves for snap weights and a lot of crank baits with snap weights also.

Another use is with your shallower running cranks to achieve the depth of deep diving cranks.

Yes, thank you Jamiec. That's more what I'm wondering is with the shallower diving cranks. I'll have to check out the precision trolling app

Just to add in on the precision trolling app. If you havent bought it yet you have 2 choices. You can buy individual lures or you can buy the lifetime membership. The lifetime membership is the way to go as you get all new lures as its added to their already substantial list. You will save money doing the lifetime membership. On running lures and the 50 plus 2 method BigMac mentioned dont forget to add in the depth that your lure will achive on the 50 ft before adding the snap weight when figuring out your target depth.
