Quinte Fishing

So a few us tried for some walleye on New Years Day and after 4 hours with no fish we switched it up and headed to the gap to try for some lakers for the first time. We started at Cressy Point and within minutes had our first fish. After about 3.5 hours we had 8 fish (almost 9 but came unbuttoned at the boat), totaling close to 100lbs of fun. Best part was a double header with two 18lb fish. Needless to say we did alright but what we're wondering is did we do the right thing in staying at Cressy Point or are there lakers EVERYWHERE this time of year at the gap? I.e. could we have just kept working the same depth (approximately over 60 - 90 FOW) or was circling back the right move? I should add that we were running spoons on both riggers and boards with clip weights running 1.8 - 2.0mph. The spoon that did the most damage was wonder bread but it seemed like they were ready and willing to bite anything!

I've read a few posts from some of you (thank you) but thought I'd post to see if we might get some more info from the avid laker anglers on here. Not sure we'll get out in the boat again until the Spring but I thought a good laker discussion while waiting for good ice might help pass the time.

I have only been fishing lake trout in Eastern Ontario for a couple years so lots more guys with more experience. But there are a lot of lakers out there, not everywhere, but there are numerous shoreline and shoal options that could hold lakers on any given day.

If I find a concentration of feeding fish whether lakers in the gap or walleye in the reach, I usually turn and circle back and work the active fish until the action dies, then move on.

Kept in 60 fow all day in the gap worked for us.
Spoon and drop weight on a board was best.
New at this as well just saying what worked.
Big thanks to jamiec for the tips, nice meeting you as well.

Way to go MuskyRob, it's tough fishing but great results.

A few years ago you came on my boat to show me how to catch Lakers.
I never fished that far out of warm weather temperatures before and you gave me the confidence to keep trying.
