I used to give them to the police department, but decided this year to keep them and use them if I run out out in an emergency.

When asked for your flares, show the good ones, keep the old in a plastic baggie.

The fire dept. might. If you buy flares at Marine Outfitters they'll take the old. At least they use to.

Good to know about the flares. Does anyone know where to get rid of expired bear spray?

Just a heads up: I believe the rules have been adjusted to match the USA Coast Guard within the last year.

Strobe style can now replace flares.

Also if, your boat has communication device, ie cell or VHF, you need fewer flares.

Please check Cdn. Government website for more precise details.
But, once my current flares expire, I won't buy anymore (I will keep the old ones for a while).

FYI, was inspected on the water by US Coast Guard off Alexandria Bay on Victoria Day weekend. Passed.
They were very nice, and doing training of new crew ahead of their busy Memorial Day weekend.
