Good day,

It's been years that I want to go fishing for lake trout in Bath. If weather cooperates, I will try my luck in the next few weeks. I know that the bigger ones are in the big lake south of Amherst and even as far as main Duck. Not really knowing the area I plan to stay east of Prince Edward Bay, south of Amherst. Is it possible to find good populations of lake trout there this time of year? Is it safe to bounce botton with the ball? Lures, spoons, fly, spin n glo? How Deep? Any info will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hey CL1850 -
I am far, far from an expert but here's what I'd chip in, for better or worse:
We were catching trout off Big Bar shoal south of Amherst earlier but last time I was out (about a month ago, admittedly) they had moved farther out and deeper. If I were headed out this time of year - and I hope to soon - I'd look for 100+ FOW near underwater walls or canyons. Once you catch one, work that area (the old 'never leave fish to find fish' rule).
I wouldn't recommend bottom bouncing because it seems every time a lure hits bottom, it picks up a zebra mussel with a side of 'salad'. I'd target 5 to 10 feet above bottom and check your rig if it does touch to avoid dragging around a fouled lure. Lakers do associate with bottom, so it is a bit of a balancing act/game of chicken in trying to get deep-enough but not too-deep.
Flasher-fly, flasher-spin'n'glo, spoons - I suspect that they could all work on any given day.
Pick your day carefully (re: wind and weather) if you are going that far out.
And post a report and pics of your success!
Dano

Thanks for the information Dano it is much appreciated. I suspected that it was dangerous to hit the bottom with the ball. I fish Lake Champlain a lot and use this technique a lot. And yes I will report my results.

Hi Dano, I looked on NOAA for water temperature transect and it seems that for the targeted area it is too late for this season. It's hard to interpret but I think the right water temperature is around 120 feet +, which is too far out on the lake. I'll have to wait until later in the fall. Thanks again.

Keep in mind lakers season closes sept 30 till dec 1

Water temps will not change much before they close as the lake peaks around end of august early sept.

Thanks BigMac for reminding me. As I mentioned I fish lakers almost exclusively on Lake Champlain and it is open year round. Weather permitting, I fish for walleye on the St. Lawrence river in december, so I'll try my luck there. Otherwise it will be in April.
