Saturday hit Huffs in the morning and the ice was VERY sketchy. Spudded out and went through on first whack several times. With the weather since then I would recommend NOT fishing the reach until much colder weather tightens things up. There were about a dozen huts North of the launch and everyone I talked to was experiencing the same as I - marking some fish, but the bite was off, and not feeling super comfortable fishing the area. I was fishing on 3 to 4 inches of mixed ice but with the current, warm weather, and several 1/2 inch spots I spudded through, I bailed early.
Big Island Monday, fished a few spots. Ice is strange - 3 to 6 inches of mostly white ice, maybe an inch of black in some places and none in others. In many spots under the 'solid' whitish ice there's about 12 inches of hard packed snow, loose, like the stuff at the end of your driveway when the plow goes by. Never seen this before on Quinte or elsewhere. Makes clearing your hold a bit more challenging, but doable. Anyway, it was another skunk for 3 of us. Some fish were around but not great #s and what did come by was not interested. Oh yeah, there were a handful of quads and sleds out there, which I would not recommend. We put holes down in one area that had 5 inches white/1 black, and 6 ft away 3 inches white/no black. GL and be safe, get to walking!!!
