The terrible hard-water season has only being offset by the fact that I've had my boat out for the past week.

Attached are some of the 'eyes' that have found their way to the surface. The biggest was just shy of 6 lbs...and I caught several in the 3-4 lb range. All were released to be caught again.

The same combo and method has been producing well for me. Mooching a minnow on a white jig head that has a small flutter blade.

For those unfamiliar with mooching...it is simply bottom bouncing with a long line (so that there is a low line angle) and giving periodic slow, tugs...as opposed to the traditional vertical jigging directly beneath the boat. I like to cast as far out to the side as I can then let the jig drift in a large arc until it is directly down stream from the boat.

Tight lines!

No kidding...I live just north of the 401 along the Trent River and in all my life I have never seen it completely ice free during the month of February. The early thaws should lead to early spawns...which does not bode well for opening weekend.
