just wondering how many here enjoy steelhead and salmon, I'm waiting till the fall to try my luck for the first time on these, I was wondering what everyone uses, not sure I'm going to try them on a fly rod yet, but I have an 8' daiwa pro salmon rod, and wondering what line I could use that won't be affected too much by cold temperatures, I plan on using it right into december where the regs have year round season.

I live in Ajax which is only 5mins away from Duffins Creek. If you have every been to an eastern trib you will know that 90% of the people there float fish and use long 11-13 float rods, with these type of rods there is no need for tippet higher than 8lb for salmon and 6lb for rainbows. Bait can very from worms, roe, plastics, jigs, flies, and little tubs. I can get realy in-depth but it will take some time. What I can suggest is to go to these three websites listed below, ask your question and you shall get couple good responses. Also if you wish you may PM me and we can see if we can hook up for this upcoming fall. Hope this helps.

those float rods are really cool looking, I watched the video, at first I thought they were "spey" fly rods (which I really want to get into :) ) but I see they are quite different, and they were pulling the line of the reel sideways?? I have 2 8'6" 8wt fly rods which can handle even muskie. I've heard that steelhead and salmon can make amazing runs and strip off 100 yrds of line in a matter of seconds (that's what scares me) I have an 80' wf fly line and 100yrds of backing behind it, but there's room for alot more on that one, I will probably get another 100yrd put on to be safe, since I tied lots of flies for salmon I think I'll give it a try, I'll use a light tippet so the worst thing that happens is I'll have to break off and sit and reel in all that line.
just bought a box of berkley trilene big game for that daiwa salmon rod yesterday, took a practice cast and the rod broke at the ferrule!!!!!!!! all I know is it's very old, given to me by my wifes uncle, and it was hollow fiberglass. anyone else have problems with fibreglass rods??? I've never seen that happen to a graphite rod.

Hey Hoser,

I don't know too much about fly fishing but have fished quite a bit for salmon during the spawn.

I use a fenwick 11' rod with an old Shimano reel as well as my regular rods and reels I use the rest of the year too. Usually I fill them with 10lb test.

For years, every fall I would tie hundreds of roe bags. I gave that up after fishing beside someone that had better luck than I using gummy bears. They're less messy and taste good too :D All colours seem to work from green to orange but I only use a small piece of them.

Here's a pic of one of the ones I caught last year. It's the first time I've submitted a pic...thanks to Super Dad for the info. in a past topic.

I love this board!

well, changed my mind again, I won't be doing it on the fly, I just went over to quinte outdoor sports and picked up a 12'6" shimano convergence spinning rod, put my huge daiwa spinreel on it and loaded it up with 300yrds of 8lbs line. gummy bears huh?? :) do you use a float for that?? I'm wondering if you have luck with glowspoons and spinners too. great pic btw!!!

Spoons do work but you will need another rod other then your 12'6" rod. Best chance of getting some salmon is to float fish for them this upcoming September. The piers are only good at sun rise and sun set, so that leaves very little fishing time for an out of Towner. Wait till the main run comes in, pick a weekday, and fish for them till your arms fall off.

Best technique for the ultimate in fun is casting off a pier either about an hour before sundown and fish for a few hours casting glow 1/2 ounce Cleos or about an hour before the sun rises.

Prime time will be in about a week and a half to two weeks and they'll be staging close enough for shore casting off rivermouths.

As far as I'm concerned, I'll be fishing in my boat for them......a complete blast.

I've never used a float for salmon or trout fishing. I guess I should start though if people are having success. For some stupid reason, I just can't get my head around using them. :?

If anyone has any tips for me, I'd appreciate it though.

I just recently learned of floatfishing, I thought those were spey rods and then noticed the lack of fly line on them, I can't believe I've never heard of them till now.

Salmon have started to move in closer the river mouths, within a couple weeks they will be running, Colder temps and more rian will speed things up! This time last year the run was going good. I 'm sure if you head to Port Hope you may get a few at the mouth.. They have been getting them at the mouth of the Credit now!

Good Luck to everyone !!! I'll be out with the fly rod, and it is a blast to watch them run upstream and then down stream!!

Seeing legacys picture that looked like Springside Park in Napanee sure made me homesick. (Thanks for posting this btw...)

I spoke to a friend of mone in Port Alberni/BC today and apparently a 60+ pder was nailed. Where I live while working in BC/AB (yes both) in a place called Hope, it has been brutal for the most part, with lots of complications just a bit downstream near Chilliwack, that I hope you folks are hearing about.

I could never do the crowd fishing (they call it combat fishing in some circles here), depite my love for being on the river. I have always opted for fishing in the opposite season if it means having a nice quiet fishing outing (best brown trout ever was in Napanee Dec 24/1990, fishing with an accomplished rod builder from Hay Bay).

Just a note.

It is Springside Park....I love that place. So many fond memories, growing up around there.

I haven't heard anything about what's going on and as for "combat fishing," that doesn't sound too good. :x

In all of my years fishing the river, I didn't realize that browns were in that late. Are they around the falls or water plant area and what would you use?

Rainbows and browns seem to come and go throughout the winter at Springside. The falls is where my brown was caught but alas I have no idea what sort of numbers hold there (my hunch is that it is a very very small amount with rainbows dominating). Roe bags were the ticket. I have also caught a small rainbow around the same time.

The primary fishing area is from the falls downstream to the waterworks. Look very closely at who is fishing the area. There is an extremely small amount of regulars, that have a far better handle on it then me. (my home and family is in the area, but I live upstream of Vancouver on the Fraser R.) while working here. Every serious regular I have met is very quiet about what is going on at any given time and typically will fish seriously at opposite times of any crowd. When you see them fishing in crowded conditions (say 10 people), they are largely going through the motions.

I have been pleased that it seems far more civilized in recent years at Springside in the fall, while fishing. Seeing the snagging and the garbage bugs me to no end.

Regards
Don Stokes

Thanks Don.

Typically when the salmon were done their run, I wouldn't fish there much afterwards. I'll have to change that :o

In the past couple of years, I too have noticed that the pressure has let up on the amount of people fishing the falls. As a kid, I remember elbow to elbow and some very rude people not following the "code of conduct."

It's looking great with the changes they've made over time but still, the garbage isn't getting any less.

It must have been a beauty brown. I guess I'll have to go back to tying roe instead of gummy bears.

LOL my biggest brown was 6" but that was fly fishing cold creek. I picked up those berkley egg cluster imitations the other day and going to give them a try on my new steelhead spinning outfit. I want to see if they'll work, they sure do stink!! hehe I'm starting to get excited, all I do is fish for bass and resident trout so this new territory for me. the idea of combat fishing doesn't exite me though.

how about the moira?? do steelhead and kings make their way up that river to the lott dam ?? I see the city is still working on the river, I plan on getting out for a little bass fishing this weekend in there, I guess I better watch my step as they dug out some deep holes in there.
