Morning Everyone,

Heading up near Frontenac on Sunday to drop my youngest off at a Scouts meeting and hoping to do a bit of ice fishing with my oldest while were up there. FishON shows Cronk Lake as a stocked splake lake with pike as well. Anyone ever fished it? Not looking for any honey holes, just trying to get a handle on where to start.

Looking at Navionics it looks like there is a couple nice humps on the north east and south west side the lake with shallow tops leading directly into deeper water. Was thinking setting a tip-up with a minnow on the hump and jigging a bit deeper moving pretty frequently if we aren't seeing anything. Anyone have any splake tips they are willing to share, I've never fished for them.

Thanks in advance, I'll let you guys know how I make out either way.

Hi,

In the early 90s I stumbled across the best bait for Splake on a trip to Little Clear in Frontenac Park.
Little Black Crappie Sized Tube Jig (Pink or Blue Tail is all I had)
I outfished the whole crew of my older Brothers Friends and brought home a limit of 15-18 inch. (as Bass angler, I Never Keep Fish)
When Cleaning the Fish I found they all had those little Black 1/2 inch water bugs You see swimming circles on the surface in the summer.
hope You Have Cell Service out there and Some Black Crappie Jigs with You Today.

Good Luck

Thanks for the info!
Unfortunately my sons event ended up being cancelled so we didn't make the trip up but I will save that information for when I do make it to a splake lake.
My boys stumbled across a Youtube video of people ice fishing pike with hot dogs so since we weren't heading north we decided to go out on the bay yesterday and rig some tipups with hotdogs. No fish but they had a blast and it was pretty funny putting gas station hot dogs on a treble and lowering it down a hole. Might have to try it again just for laughs sometime.

Hey Corey,

I fished Cronk for my 1st time a couple of weeks ago.

Although we didn't get any splake, I lost, what I think was one close to the hole and the perch were moving around. A guy just down from us did catch one though in 32'.

I realize it's out of your way and just for future awareness, a very nice small lake and a short walk from the boat ramp to fishable water.

I've heard of huge pike there and should have tried hot dogs but only had sausages.

Cheers

Hey Paul! thanks for the info. It definitely looks like a pretty little lake. I'm hoping to get out and try it later this winter. I wasn't sure about pike sizes but FishON had mentioned pike so I figured even if we didn't find splake we would have stumbled across a pike or two. Thanks for the report and hope you're having a good winter, looks like you've got quite the ice fishing setup!
