hey right behind the durham college/university of ontario campus there is a stream type thing and i saw about 50 brown trout going up it, some up to 10 lbs id say. i have never fished for brown trout before let alone when there spawning. i was wondering if its illegal to fish for them right now? what are the regulations. im not sure of the name of this creek. but anyone who has ever fished it might know.

i don't think i want to fish for them anyway they rae spawning and are already tired from going up the stream. that was my first time seeing brown trout running up stream to spawn and was really interesting to watch. i don't have much knowledge of fish spawning habits but it looked like they would compete against each other for spots to spawn and would ram each other really fast. do fish compete for spawning grounds?

they sure do, they even eat eachothers eggs from what I've heard, so they are competing against eachother as well. I don't really know too much about trout, this is my first year fishing them, and it has mainly been as a "novelty" thing as I really don't care to fish for them. The challenge fishing for trout in small creeks can be fun though, as they tend to be hard to catch.
I think smallmouth bass are very interesting when they spawn, how they build a nest and guard it fiercly, I've been able to watch this as some have made their nests only 2' from shore, saw some small sunfish make the sorry mistake of trying to get into the nest after the eggs, brutal. I won't be fishing the tribs until bass season closes, by then it should be pretty cold and most of the fish have done spawning. (steels and kings)

I am too far away to check, but would suggest that it would only be legal to fish downstream of the CN tracks to Lake Ontario, at best. It has been or used to be that way for years. Consult your regulations or call MNR to be sure.

It is nice that you are leaving the browns to spawn. The lake run fish are always much larger and usually lighter in colouration than a resident river fish.

Regards
Don Stokes

hoser is right about the regulations, anywhere up to fri and below CN tracks all year. Hay joey I am a huge trout fisher and can tell you most of the will not start to spawn until and least mid Oct with the water temps we have right now. I may check it out Thurs or Fri  I think you are talking about Oshawa creek.

I live about a 10 minute walk from the spot on oshawa creek you are talking about. I haven't been to that spot on the creek for a couple of months. It is open to fish there until friday. I have fished there for years and I wouldn't be suprised if there were salmon mixed in with the brown trout. Most of them have not started to spawn yet but they will be in the next couple of weeks. After that they are pretty beat up and tired. Most of the salmon don't even make it back to the lake before dying. South of the cn tracks is open all year.

oh ok thats good to hear that i can fish there, theres like some public trails behind the houses near durham college. Behind durham college directly it seems to be private property and ive seen at least a good 300 brown trout and i do believe one rainbow trout im not sure though. im gonna try on friday since thats the last day i have to fish there. i dunno if there gonna bite but if they do ohhhh its gonna be fun. alot of fish in there at least 10 lbs +. just gonna try some worms and spawn eggs don't know what else to try.

good luck on fishing for browns, they have some nice colour patterns on them thats for sure, don't forget to bring a camera with you. as for me, I'm still on the hunt for bass until I stop catching them, as it's been getting colder they're getting harder to find. :?

I'd bet my next paycheck that those fish that you are seeing are in fact salmon. Browns rarely make it that far up north (those from the lake) and they typically spawn after the salmon have gone through their mass orgy. I have fished OC for over 25 yrs and I know that area quite well. And fishing is closed up north of Hwy 2 until next April for trout.

You will see some natural browns spawning shortly but those fish will top out at 5lbs.

Salmon are nice and dark so that is why you may be confused....and there certainly aren't 300 browns in OC that size (or any creek in fact). Sorry if it seems like I'm disclaiming your report, but like I said I'll put my paycheck against anyone that those aren't browns.

Also, the browns usually hang out in Storey Park or a bit further south to the old Tannery Bldg (now the COA office)....in the olden days you'd be lucky to see 20 fish from Hwy 2 down to Thomas St.....and brown runs are a far cry from what they were 20 years ago.

Sorry......

Since I've not fished or ever even cared for a salmon or trout run before, I decided to go have a look, took this pic at one of the tribs along the 401

Image

this is a chinook if I'm not mistaken, are these the same as the ones you saw?? just curious, i'm new to this since I'm a warmwater fisher. Seen alot of "combat" fishing going on and I'll tell ya, it's really starting to look unappealing to me. Maybe I'll give salmon a go when it's freezing cold out and there's snow on the ground.

Yes that is a salmon but you will only be able to catch them for another 2-3 weeks tops, from there they are done spawning and die, and the steelhead take over :D

hah i dunno if my rod is big enough to handle some of those really big ones. while casting into a group i hooked one on the back and tried to pull it in to get the hook out but i couldn't budge the fish haha. but that could also be because trying to pull a fish in on its side is like 100 times harder due to a bigger surface area of the fish going against the water.
