Well, my Dad and I went for our third, and final, trip of the year on Saturday and we got skunked again -- BOQ 3, us 0.

Once again we marked lots of fish, and although we tried everything in the tacklebox except my pliers we still came up empty. We mainly fished the western shore between Picton Harbour and the cement plant because it looked pretty rough down towards the ferry.

Lots of boats -- at one point we counted 8, but I think we only saw one net over the side of another boat and didn't get a good look at what was being hauled in.

In the morning we were running planer boards and I noticed that the clip was getting iced up as it would periodically get dunked in the water and I wondered if there was a good way to avoid this and whether, should we ever actually get a fish on, this would cause problems in releasing the line from the clip -- any insight on this would be appreciated.

Regardless of the outcome, it was still a lot better to have spent 5 hours on the water, than to have been doing something else on Saturday.

We're planning to have the boat back in the water for the opener, hopefully we'll have more luck in the spring.

You will find when fishing in freezing conditions that the clips may ice up and so will the eyelets in your rod, etc. Just use pliers to release the clips on your planer boards. You will also find that the water will not run through your pump initially when starting your motor(s). Just let them run at idle for a couple of minutes and the water will work its way through. Good luck! The cold produces some challenges but........... also the biggest fish!!

How did everyone else do on the weekend? Guys?

Concur: the best is yet to come! I hope to get down with my dad sometime later this week when the winds look good.

i'm not sure if i'd suggest that....

just break the ice encosing the opening, and let the water stream out right off the bat...
