Nitinaht is a 22 k long inland tidal lake on the west coast of Vancouver Island. One of 2 in the world. And I am fortunate enough to work there every day and witness one of the largest returns of salmon in many years.
An estimated 1.2 million fish will enter the lake via the narrow gap to the ocean befor it,s all over. Sockeye, chinook,coho,chum,steelhead...in that order. A well managed hatchery has a lot to do with this and innovations such as storing fingerlings in open water pens prior to release have proven
very sucessful.
There are black bears and Eagles everywhere. Tried fishing last wk. and were immediatly back in the car because of a bear.Fishing is allowed in the river and you can keep 4. All this amidst rainforest covered ,mist mountains. You all should check it out if you ever get a chance!!
I am looking forward to fishing the Bay of Quinte this coming season.
Looking for a very calm and relaxed occasional fishing partner. [/i]

I have crossed the Nitnat while backpacking the West Coast Trail. Are you moving to the Quinte area or just visiting?

Feel welcome to look me up when you are in this area. I would feel quite comfortable giving you an overview of fishing ops. here and would most certainly welcome getting some insight into Van. Island opps. I live in Napanee and am a fairly frequent visitor to AB/BC given that I have to work in that area more.
