Fellow B o Q Fisherman,

After spending the better part of the last decade and a half moving across Canada, I am making the journey down from North Bay and returning to the Bay this upcoming weekend to take my dad fishing and try my luck in the derby.

It has been nearly 14 years since I last fished in the Trenton area on opening weekend, and it looks as though the entire ecological system has changed...both due to the zebra mussel infiltration and the local paper mills cleaning up their acts.

I'm looking for one piece of advice...should I be focusing my efforts in and around the mouth of the Trent (my "old school" ways), or should I be heading out into the bay...to which I am less familiar. I know that ice-out came pretty early down that way, so I am assuming that the spawning run has all but dwindled to a trickle.

I am new to this forum, and would appreciate any and all advice. I only fish c 'n r, so I'm not out to destroy the stocks. I have pulled my fair share of memorable fish out of the lower Trent, including a 6 lb smallie...so if you're willing to talk, so am I.

Tight lines!

Assuming that you are in a smaller boat, I would cast my vote for fishing the Trent R. area. It is large, always has a variety of fish with some interesting surprises on a consistent basis. Just some quick thoughts.

As far as spawning goes, there will still be walleye holding in the river, regardless of an early spawn.

Regards

Hey Budsfan, one would think that after moving across Canada you'd choose a better hockey team to pull for (Go Habs Go).
That being said, you're correct. The days of motoring up to the # 1 damn in Trenton, and drifting down with the current jigging doesn't work as well anymore, it still will get you a fish, but not as much as it used to. You may be right about fishing the mouth, but be prepared of the crowded fishing in that area, if that doesn't work, I'd concentrate more towards the east of Trenton. Good luck and welcome back to Quinte, be sure to post your results on Monday.

One thing about the Trent river is you know rather quickly, by watching the other boats, if the fish are there. As a suggestion, why not be prepared to pull out and relaunch else where if the fish are not there? It is about 35-40 minutes to Deseronto launch and from there you could work long reach and beyond.

Thanks for the info guys,

I'm running an 18' fish/ski boat so I'm not afraid of bigger water. I'm also mobile and prepared to go where the fish are...so I'm not dead set on fishing the mouth.

Never fished up Deseronto way, but may be up to giving it a shot. Have been reviewing old posts and other web sites and found that the narrows out towards Picton get more than their fair share of mention...would that area be valid for this time of year?

K.B.
