2 in 3 days is correct (although we were off the water by 8am on Sunday due to inclemant weather). One around 8.5 and the other 10 and change - both in Picton Bay around 25 feet. Only saw 1 other boat catch 1 fish over the three days. I did see Targa (Tom right?) out near Thompsons- where we marked lots of fish but all deep - not sure how he made out.

I do believe that the "other boat" referred to above that only caught <b>one stinkin' fish</b> just happened to be <b>ME.</b> I talked to Buddy using the <b>lead core line,</b> and told him that he had clearly <b>defied the odds</b> by catching two fish!

As for my dad and me, let's just say we came as close to being skunked as you can get, without actually <b><i>being</b></i> skunked....... Know what I mean?

The fish are <b>there</b> - this is certain. For reasons known only to themselves, they chose to be ornery and uncooperative.

[Actually, it is entirely possible the fish themselves do not know precisely <b>why</b> they are ornery and uncooperative. I have an <b>ex-wife</b> who frequently acts the same way, and I doubt she knows why, either ....]

My dad and I have been fishing Picton in the fall for the last dozen or so years, and I would like to think I know almost as much about it as can be known [though I could always stand to learn more]. And while the fishing is not as good as it used to be [something to do with indians removing a hundred thousand plus fish each year] there is no reason to panic - yet. I tried all of our usually-successful patterns without [much] success.

I believe the <b>crappy fishing</b> over the past few days was due to <b>two reasons</b> - firstly, it may simply be <b>too early</b> in the season, as the best fishing comes just before the ice forms. The water may still be too warm. Secondly, the damn fish just weren't <b>biting!</b>

Sheesh.

Were one so inclined, this might be an appropriate time to <b>rest on one's laurels.</b> Unfortunately, the <b>laurels</b> to which I have linked you at left do not belong to me!

Cheers,

<b>"Pass the Pitons" Pete</b>

I forgot to mention that we fished from about <b>3 pm Thursday Nov 7,</b> and then into <b>Thursday night,</b> packing it in around 8 pm when it was obvious our efforts were in vain.

We got back out on the water late morning <b>Friday,</b> and gave 'er hell til about the same time Friday night.

Since <b>Saturday the 9th</b> was so beautiful and warm, against our better judgement we went out for another couple hours.

In <b>Neil</b> parlance, we were "whacking our weenies."

Many hours, one miserable fish.

But you know what? I've fished <b>a lot longer</b> for <b>a lot less.</b> [I'd be willing to bet that <b>you</b> have, too] Besides, it beats the heck out of working.....

Cheers,

Pete

ptp pete, it is good to see your posts again i always enjoy them, you had some really memorable daysand nites at quinte, i reread the posts a few times, the past weekend seemed slow from talking to guys at dock at tip of bay, i got 9 sat from1to 4 in afternoon and 10 sun fishing with tom, during the day, i only had one boat near me over the two days and that was a charter who insisted on moving me off of my spot, i guess i caught one fish too many in front of his bored clients, i had to keep moving off my gps coordinates to avoid him running over my board, big rep. but slow day i guess, i wont say more but i haven't seen that in a long time, sun we left a fish on the board till he went by since he slowed down to gravy train on me the second day in a row, and tom reeled it in when he finally sped up and went by, meanwhile he is the most secretive and unfriendly at the ramp etc, a charter with confidence isn't afraid to talk in at least general terms, oh well , if you have so much scary info quit getting within 50 feet up my boat everytime i have a fish on to see what i'm doing...i still fish for fun and don't keep any quinte fish, making a living out of it changes everything for some people i guess...

Can't think of anything else right off the bat - how about another hint? Sounds like Sunday turned out to be alright after all - kinda wish I had of stayed. Saturday wasn't great, but you couldn't beat the temperature; it was kinda nice to fish Quinte without gloves for a change.

Noticed that your post last week said that you were booked with clients - you guiding?

Steve a BIG CONGRATS on all the fish. I believe you may be the one that lent my bud from Winnipeg, Gary, a portable planer board on the weekend. I know what you mean re the charter comments. I had the same experience with him a couple years ago. Plugged me for all the info he could get but not a darn thing back in return. I got the secretive story from him as well; i.e can't give you info because it is my livelihood and you might take fish that his clients might catch..........

gary helped me a lot the first year i started fishing quinte and really pointed me in the right direction, during the week another question would occur to me and when i would run into him again on the weekend he always took time to answer my question re line size, depth or whatever, even though at times he was anxious to get back on the water,...i really respected his awareness regarding conservation also at a time when few people seemed to consider the importance of it, since then i have fished literally every weekend during the fall until the bay totally freezes and have learned a lot, so if i can return the favour and contribute to gary catching the odd extra fish, then that's great....not that he really needs any help but it is fun anyway....

Good guess.S.M. 20 it is. It's a particular colour that seems to always work good.Rule of thumb /clear day... natural colour. Dark day ...dark colour.Don't be afraid to go fast. Sorry to be so evasive, I just like people to work a bit for ideas.I learned the Bay without any help and I believe that too many freebees only hinders the learning process. The things we learn on our own will always endure the test of time. Those which are given to us have less value.

Yes, I can really appreciate that. Myself and partner came down there 2 years ago and since then with time on the water and some of your "on site" tips, we have really caught on to this type of fishing. THANKS. We'll be down from next wednesday til Sunday, so hopefully we will see you there. And know the fishing will only get better!!!!!!!
