Are pontoon boats easy to fish from? What are they like in the wind? We have just sold a tri-hull and a deep V hull runabout, and are shopping for a used 16-17 foot boat, pontoon or Bow-rider to use primarily in Hay Bay/Bay of Quinte. What size of motor is too small for a Pontoon boat of this size? Comments welcome.

BayBoy,

I've only had one experience fishing from a pontoon with a fellow camper and boy it's tough. His is 21feet with a 90 Honda and almost impossible to slow it down to slow troll weedlines.

Trolling bags would slow it down.

The height of the craft also makes it vunerable to the occasional wind  on the bay.

I'd ask a friend or someone who had one and ask them to take you out to see how it goes.

You gotta love pontoon boats.

They are, like SuperDad say, hard to troll from. But the comfort is great for casting and relaxing.

A for sure heat score though....every police boat from miles around will be stopping you :?

If you're looking to rent one to try it out, there's a place in Westport.

Cheers

I have fished out of a 20 foot pontoon boat for the past 3 years. You need a drift bag for slow drifting but it is good for trolling. I only have a 50 4 stroke on it so it slows right down for trolling but I also use planer boards.
It works great cause my wife can come with me and she can read while I fish.
