Quinte Fishing

I just read another report that mentioned they were trolling at 2.5mph.

This weekend I was trying to cover water because I was only fishing Saturday and don't know the area that well. I caught 2 nice ones at 2mph.

I ussually try troll at between 1 and 1.5 mph.

I'm starting to wonder if when trolling open water walleye if you shouldn't travel a little faster to try and make them bite out of reaction.

I am 1.4 to 2.0

but i always like to experiment.

I have typically trolled about 1.3 - 1.5 mph in the day, and 0.6 to 0.8 mph at night.

Based on what you guys have written, I will definitely try it a bit faster in the daytime.

This time of year I like 1 to 2mph on the gps and take note of when I get a hit: on an inside turn (slower) or an outside turn (faster) and adjust to what they're hittin'! My largest Quinte walleye was on a clown #9 shad rap on leadcore SUPER SLOW- I think it was in late November two years ago.

Also, throwing the kicker in neutral for a few moments and then starting away again has produced some strikes.

I usually troll 1.4-2.0 but focus on slowing as the temps drop.

2.3 to 2.6 worked for me this past Saturday, boating only 6 eyes ...but 3 of them over 10 pounds and the other three just off the 10 pound mark

I don't knkow if this makes sense to you guys or not.

What I do is start my troll speed at 3.0 mph. This gets your lures down and set up quickly. Once I get set up, I vary my speed from 1.2 - 2.5. Yes a vary lrage variance. Have you ever noticed the amount of hook ups you get on a turn? I also find starting at 3.0 gets your lures deeper and stay deeper once you back off on your speed.

Yes I think varying your speed can help. Depends on weather and temp.

Yes, speed is important. Too fast, they won't chase. But... if you're too slow, you aren't covering water as efficiently as you could. And really, that's why people troll in the first place, to increase the odds of contacting fish. I've heard it many times, if you're getting fish at 2 mph, try 2.2, if you still get them at 2.2, try 2.4 etc... Some days, super slow is the key, other days the only way to get bites is to cover lots of water. I remember last fall a buddy of mine kicked butt on the reach trolling 2.6 when everyone else was staying down at 2.0. Did he get reaction bites or was he just covering more water? I think it was a bit of both, other boats were getting the odd fish here and there, but he was picking them off pretty steady. My range would be 1.0 - 3.0.

Well, you guys were right. I picked up the pace to around 2.2 mph compared to my old-school speed of 1.3 to 1.5, and guess what - it worked!

The winds were blowin' pretty hard, so it was hard to go slowly. I tried, but the success came at faster speeds. I wonder why? Do you think it's because the water is so clear these days from the zebra mussels?

i have a feeling it has something to do with the large amounts of walleye in there right now, the fast moving baits pull the aggressive fish up to strike....

i think giving a normal slow approach isn't going to get the walleye's attention, especially with the amount of bait that is in there right now....

also, like you said, with the average winds on quinte being quite heavy, giving a presentation at 2.3-2.6 is really easy....
