Bass Pro Shops to expand into New York State

Outdoor retailer Bass Pro Shops plans to expand into New York state because of the large population base, outdoor heritage and residents' interest in hunting, fishing and outdoor sports, a company spokesman told The Buffalo News for a Thursday, November 14 report.

The company announced on Wednesday that it will build a small-format store in Auburn, New York, near Syracuse; however, the company still is interested in launching a flagship store in Buffalo, possibly at the Memorial Auditorium, the newspaper reported.

Bass Pro will open a Sportsman's Warehouse store in Auburn, west of Syracuse. The 50,000-square-foot store is the smallest format the Missouri-based chain operates, according to the newspaper.

The Bass Pro Outdoor World store being considered for the Auditorium in Buffalo would be at least 140,000 square feet in size and include indoor archery, gun ranges, putting greens and an in-store café, the newspaper stated.

"The project we are pursuing in Auburn is part of a larger strategy to bring Bass Pro Shops to New York," Martin Macdonald, director of corporate communications for Bass Pro, told the newspaper. "We are continuing to look in New York."
