I'm fixing for a late Dec trip to the Bay but wanted to get some opinions on whether it's necessary to use a planer board set up if you are trolling exclusively with an electric motor?

My understanding is that schooled walleye scatter to the sides as the sound of a gas motor passes overhead. But if you are using an electric motor, there is no real sound so would it still necessary to use a planer? Or would flat lining suffice?

Your thoughts and opinions are much appreciated!

Engine sound is one factor but the boat shadow is major factor, if you do not like to use planner board, flat lines will catch few fish but planner boards makes huge difference. In these cold days trolling speed is very crucial, ideal would be 1.5 miles or little slower. Try different lengths 120 ft to 250 ft with no stretch line and do not forget to use good quality fluoro carbon leader minimum 25 ft.
Good Luck!!!!

The boards will also add action to your lure if there is any wave-action on the lake. Try one rod with a board and one without to see for yourself what they like that particular day.
