what is the list for 17' boat in simple terms, i don't want to be missing any required safety equip as it sounds like the opp are being very strict, is there more then:running lights, sounding device(horn or whistle), sealed flashlight, bailer, lifejackets, throwing rope with float, fire extinguisher, -i have flares but not sure they are required.

i strongly suggest everyone has all there running lights working if out after dark and that they have all safety equip readily avail, i plan to put everything together in a container, we talked to, and heard of quite a few people who received hefty fines last weekend, for seemingly small things, like a loose bulb. if you ever need the safety equip in this cold water you'll want it handy anyway, so it doesn't hurt and i used to hate coming into the harbour after dark dodging boats with no lights esp. if it was snowing etc...

You missed an anchor with no less than 15 m of rode or paddles, better to have a good anchor than try to paddle an 18 footer off a lee shore. In a lot of places on the bay 15m of rode won't keep you off the rocks so more rope and some chain might be a good idea.

Over 6 m you will need the flares.

The address Harry gave to check the regs says 3 flares but after checking my three the OPP said we now need six.

just got back from weekend at quinte and got to see OPP check in action first hand instead of reports or whatever, they couldn't have been better, gave me suggestions re greater safety as i was fishing alone, very positive experience, i had all my required items readily available as i was anxious about it after reading prev. reports , they discussed safety course which i plan to take asap. it is for my(our) benefit anyway. thought it was worth noting...
