 Post subject: Crappie Hotspots

Since the Crappie season is almost upon us I'm wondering where to fish for them. Other then the BOQ what are some of the lakes and rivers in Hastings County and surrounding areas that you can find Crappie. I don't know of any spots to start for them in this area so any info as to which river or lake to start on would be appreciated. Are the Crappie this far east established well or are the numbers and spots low to find them?

Use to slay them on West Lake back in the days, I'm sure its still pretty good.
East lake too I would imagine would be worth trying.

2 years ago i counted 8 hoop nets on westlake, and last year there was 6 running that i know of. maybe thats why the crappi have gone???........... i did talk to one guy who nets both east, and west lakes and he told me how good it USED to be! ............ like duh!
What i find ironic is he also told me most the fish he catched ends up going to California, and state side fish markets............ funny we cant fish with nets in fresh water or sell freshwater fish here in the states. I have to wonder if that makes us americans bad for buying them. I do know this, no good old boy is gonna pay for a fish he can catch for free, so blame the city folk who wouldnt know witch end of a rod to hold.

I camp on west lake and fish it every weekend in the summer I catch a few of them but They are harder to find, but when you do there are some nice crappies in there. I actually have a Huge tree out front of my dock its hollow inside it, Its good there in may and most of the summer. I always catch them fishing for bass in the summer though. West lake is a great place to fish for walleyes right in the weed beds, caught some nice ones at dark!

I have only fished west lake once and it was from a dock.

I was staying at some resort for my cousins wedding, and after the reception the party continued . . . its about 3 am so decided to go fishing since their was a decent weed bed right off the end of the dock.

Second cast i get one on (keeping in mind i am TOTALLY BLITZED) and i get it to the dock (which is a floating dock) and i lean over to grab the fish and my sister bf comes down at the pefect time, he steps on the dock and send me off ballance and SPLASH!! I sobered up pretty quick, the fish got away and i was miserable, haha.

I was afraid to hear that! That place rocked, not only for crappie, but smallies and pike too! That is pretty frustrating to hear of all the netting going on there, that fishery was amazing just from a dock.

Fished west lake a few times last year, tried a inflatable raft and hit some decent weed beds, lotsa dinky Pike and Bass..... got the bigger boat out one night and managed a lone soldier.... 2 pound walleye. Fish finder showed all kinds of activity tho! Saw one kid pull in a decent crappie off the docks.

We don't hardly ever get any smallies on west lake. if you want to catch lots of eyes in west lake start fishing them from about 1 week after opening day and u will hammer them all about 1-3 pounds. some nice pike to.

.....One thing for sure if yer just out for fun, and just wanna catch fish both east, and westlake are alot of fun.......... most of the fishing i do when im up there is on westlake and ive been fishing it for years now ....... id say over 1000 eyes in the past six years but just a handfull ever made it to the 4 pound mark and only one in the six range and the bigger ones are hard to come by.
Good bass, and panfish as well . in the spring the gars roll in and its not uncommon to see 50 surface on a good morning troll even managed a few to hit a trolling lure by cuttin hard and let the lure float in the school they can be a blast . ........
often you gotta find the walleyes but when you do you can hit them all day sometimes definatly a hot lil lake...... and i find eastlake even better at times . thats a lake where you can find large, and small mouth...... great pike fishing, and good walleye as well some running even bigger than westlake but for the most part pretty equel in size but lots of them.
i fish alone and have a boat always willing to take out a good fellow be fair worned i sometimes fish from sunrise to sunset just as easy to troll 2 lines as it is one so if anyone is intrested get in touch and ill let you know when im gonna be there ........ a man isnt measure in his wealth more rather in the amount of good friends he makes along his journy thru life!
