I know that it is very late in the season, but I was wondering if anyone has accurate information on the state of the Glenora Ferry boat launch. My brother is visiting from the States and I was hopeful in getting the boat out one more time. My initial feeling is negative, but any information would be appreciated. Merry Christmas to all,

Sincerely,

Captain Hank

For all of you doubters out there, I managed to make the three hour drive on Friday to find the boat launch at McFarland's completetly void of any ice or snow. The road leading to the launch had perhaps 1 inch of snow, easy for any 4x4 to drive down and back up. The ice edge (from the Picton bay side) was at least 100 yards from reaching the boat launch, and open water was everywhere!!! I drove the boat towards the Glenora Ferry only to discover that it, too, was in excellent shape.
Don't risk going out on the ice yet, I am certain that it is not safe - there appeared to be many open sections scattered on the frozen surface. Play it safe, launch your boat instead.

Sincerely,

Captain Hank

Thanks for the post Captain Hank. Did you catch any?

I haven't put away the boat yet so I think I will make one more trip to the county with KKing.

Regards.

the launch at mcfarlanes and ferry are in good shape, we fished sun, and it was like a mid nov day, lots of marks near edge of ice towards picton harbour, best marks near or on the bottom, some good marks near ferry also, the fishing was great but the catching was slow, but it is fun catching anything this time of year on open water, seems like a bonus, next time i would bring some minnows and try drifting with jig and minnow or lindy rig, i bet it would work good, lots of open water near typical jigging spots towards haybay also, please report if you go fishing. good luck...

I can not believe that someone would even think about putting a boat in the water at this time of year. Unless you want to simulate the Titanic I would not advice trying a boat in the Bay of Quinte.

i would have to agree you should be extra careful and i would be less likely to fish alone when part of the bay is frozen(i guess) but it depends on the conditions, ie. are there big chunks of ice floating around ? how windy is it, etc. usually the conditions are stable where there is part of the bay frozen and large open areas in middle, where the ships are still going through, different parts of quinte may not be as safe though.

Guys,

If there is water, some people cannot resist it.

About four years ago I was coming back from some
ice fishing at about 5:30 pm (just into dark) at the beginning
of February. I was going north over the Deseronto Bridge.
What did I see but a 300 lb + guy in a 10-12 ft boat motoring
along at about a 45 degree angle (Due to his weight). It would
have been a unsafe even on a hot summer day. I don't know if
he was fishing. More than likely he was.

I don't think he was wearing a life jacket either.

Oh well, those are the guys that nothing ever happens too.

It's the guys that have every piece of safety equipment on their boat
that have the bad luck. Go figure.

He WILL put you on the fish. :)

BTW...Fatboy... I found the Roll of film. So let the good folks know just WHO CAUGHT THE BIGGEST PIC THIS YEAR.

Who's your DADDY...

Hey KKING,

I picked up my pictures today. They show me holding alot of big picks and you holding a net.

By the way, did you get a new net for Christmas the other one was getting worn out from me hooking all those fish.

Happy New Years to all Walleye men and women.

Slopman,

sorry for the late reply, but I just returned from a 4 day holiday. Catching fish was very slow last Friday. We fished the entire section of open water (from the Cement plant to the Ferry) and only marked scatterred fish - ALL were right on the bottom. No large schools of fish were marked, and not one school of baitfish was detected. We were trolling deep diving crankbaits on planar boards and on downriggers. It was cloudy all day and dead calm, which really aren't the most ideal walleye fishing conditions. We started fishing at 7:00 a.m. and stopped at 2:00 p.m., perhaps the evening bite would have been better. The fish on the bottom were appearing as LARGE hooks on my sonar, but simply were not interested in what I was presenting to them. I wish that I had had some live minnows and jigs...

Sincerely,

Captain Hank
