Hello all,

I headed out to the Brothers Islands and Dupont Bay yesterday afternoon. As soon as I hit the water, my power trim wouldn't go down with the switch....up wasn't a problem.

After waiting a bit, it went down on it's own but again, no power seems like it's going to it. No clicking, or sounds at all in the down position.

Still headed out and had a great afternoon....only 2 pike (8, 10 lb) but it was a great run.

Got home and headed out for a couple of beers with some friends. When I got home again, my girlfriend is in the kitchen when she tells me that the power trim on the boat is going. I run out and as soon as I was beside it, it turned off.

Thinking it was an isolated incident, I left it. An hour later, I hear it again but this time, it ran until I hit the switch. Again, no power down, just up and it was leaking hot fluid. I had to remove the battery cables on the main battery 8O

Sooooo, is it possessed?

It sounds electrical, There are two relays, one for up and one for down. It sounds to me like one relay is sticking or not latching.

Sorry...I'm pretty dense with such things!

Was that on the motor or the switch on the dash?

Cheers

had sim problem
sounds like bad switch
only making contact in up mode
and if it is running by itself only in up mode
sounds like switch
if motor has remote switch does it work the same
if it does check all wire connections

I've had the same problem a few times. Twice it's been the switch on the side of the motor and twice it's been the switch on the throttle lever. After finding out what the casue was the first time it happened it was easy to determine what the problem was other times and it didnt' take long to discover once I knew the symptoms. To determine what switch is causing the problem all you have to do is start disconnecting switches when you have the problem again and then the trim unit stop trying to move then you've found the correct switch. All the switches on the circuit will have some type of plug or connector in order to disconnect it.

I find it had to belive that it's a relay because if one relay or the other wasn't working then you wouldn't be able to trim up or down dependant on which relay was faulty. But the relay should be fairly inexpensive to change out and it's something that you can do on your own.

Weird science this electrical stuff.

Good luck getting it straightened out.

And to think they are planning to send humans to Mars.... hopefully they won't be using faulty relays on that craft.

Wow...thank you for all of the replys.

I'm really new to this boat owning thing that's bigger than a 14'. I'll check it out and see.

At least I now know I dont' have to get an exorcism done.

I keep telling people this is the best forum "in the world...that's right, the world!"

.......I always have to tell them twice to get my point across. :D

Cheers

Just a quick head's up. I went through the same thing with my Evinrude this summer. Finally isolated the problem as the down relay and purchased one at the dealership for a mere $32. When I got it home and replaced it, no change. The block into which the two relays fit looked a little rough so I went back to the dealership and had to order one. Great service, 48 hour delivery. Got home and deceided to disassemble the unit in prep for the new part and what did I find? There's a ground behind the block into which the Tilt/Trim relays go, it was broken. Long story short, I now have a new tilt/trim relay in my tackle box for a spare(no return on electrical parts), and did the repair for less than $2.

My advice, find someone whose been through it and have a good look at the electrical componet of the tilt/trim before you make any purchases.

take the grandkids fishin

Again, thanks.

I'm thinking that's the best idea, Bassn51. I'm pretty much stupid with these sort of issues and will contact the marina here to look at it.

Hopefully I can hook up with one that will put the motor to sleep when it's ready too.

Now, if the walleye would start to come in....

Cheers
