Quinte Fishing

Myself and a buddy cautiously ventured out today after a few days of scouting for safe ice. Let me stress that not everywhere is safe, but where we were at that moment was safe. Tomorrow may not be the case, as not very far way would not be safe. We marked a lot of fish, but they were not biting. I marked a fish for 12 minutes and tried everything I knew to trick him into a strike. We both washed pretty well every jigging spoon that we brought with us with only the two fish to show. Be safe out there, and Happy Hardwater! 'Tis the Season...

We had a great time fishing with you guys last year as well. I can't wait to do it again. As far as the ice goes, yes that picture does look like minimal ice. We noticed that when we looked at the pictures. Rest assured that we were proceeding with caution and never went on anything less than 4". That hole was 4". I believe that because it was punched with a spud it may have looked like less in the picture. This ice where w were was very strong, hard ice. It took 6 hits with the spud to go through. The bite was very tough though. The barometer was 102 and rising. I think that may have been related. Any comments on that?

Your still nuts in my books! I see less then 4 inches there forsure! I spudded a hole this morning and it looked the exact same! 2 inches man!
Good for you for getting out but I wouldnt be hyping it, other people see these reports from out of town and they just assume the ice is good! You and I being locals know where we can get away with that but people see this and they just get that itch! Just my opinion man!

Sure. I can see your point. Please all note that I did say that not far from where I was would not be safe. I actually measured one spot at 5", however I would place that particular hole at approximately 4". Think what you will, but I will never venture out if there is a risk. If people prefer, I can refrain from posting.

K sounds good Jeff! Im not saying you shouldnt post.... but maybe a general area of where you were fishing so people dont just walk out in any given spot that is prolly unsafe! I wont step a foot on the bay till 7 inches call me a pussy but I see someone lose there life almost once a year and usually it's a guy thats has done it for 10-20 years! Good for you guys in life suits 2! Man not trying to hit on your post IM just saying it's still really FREAKIN EARLY! There's still gotta be alot of air trapped under that ice as well!

I prefer not to post location even at the moment as if it went from 5" to 4" in 10 yards, then it can easily go to less. I can't explain on here where exactly to step, so I will wait until the entire area is safe. There were areas very close to me that I wouldn't want to set foot on. I spud every step or two and punch a hole through every 5' and reach under to measure. I must say, Ice Armor gloves, or any of the other similar ones are perfect for this. Worth every cent. Warm dry hands inside, soaked on the outside.

Ya that sounds real safe to me!

I completely agree with you there Jeff! I bought a pair of Arctic Armor gloves last winter. They are amazing! They cost $40, but like you said, worth every penny. Was up a BOQ last December, dunked my hand in the water for a few minutes and my hands still dry and warm. Be safe out there this winter, all of ya.
