I’m getting conflicting reports on the ice conditions from a lot of people .Some say it’s good to go and some are saying that we need another couple of days of good cold weather. I’m still maintaining that we need a bit of time yet. The area’s that I’m checking are good to go but I’m still spudding my way out to make sure. I was on a spot last night and I had a good 5 to 6 inches of good solid ice the next spot I check I had only 2 to 3 inches about 50 feet off shore. I know some guys are thinking of heading out to rush bar. But the guides that I use have been out to check and are reporting a lot of current with thin ice 2 to 21/2 inches in some spots’ not good in my books. The Trent River mouth is still not a great place to be. I hear a lot of guys saying that there is five inches of ice out at the mouth. That’s funny because this is the one place that I checked last night fifty feet from shore.
I’m sure that if we all check the same spots we would all have different measurements but we don’t. When I report the thickness I’m not just checking one spot I do a few in the same area and the smallest and the worst is the only reports I give. This way you and I both know that some of the areas that may have good ice do have some dangerous spots.
A couple of more good cold nights should do up the bay quite good all over. Hang in there we will all be giving it our best not to long from now. I know some of you have heard and read about atv’s going out and so on, but you have to remember these guys and gals have been ice fishing here for years and they know the bay like the back of their hand and trust me these folks are not taking chances in places they shouldn’t be. Unfortunately some don’t and all we can do is hope and pray for them.
Sorry for the report but I still maintain lives are more important than money.
Ron
