Jeff I had a feeling walking out I saw one in close off the launch area near the old broken down house so I put my spikes in hand. As I went past two guys where I fished 2 days ago and it was a good 5 inches, I noticed a few really wet spots walked one more step, as I was falling let go of my buckets and spiked instantly, i swear I pulled out within 3 seconds, my brother was 3 steps behind me and frooze. Walked back to the 2 guys fishing and they had a heater warmed up and got off the ice very quickly..... NOT SAFE YET!

Glad to hear your okay.

I am from Timmins Ontario, nine hours north. i read the forum daily, and make it up in the winter in the search for hogs.

What a winter... don't feel bad on the ice conditions. We still don't have our huts out, there is only 9-12" of ice but with 10" of slush and a foot of snow. Slopply. With most huts in the 1000-1200 lbs range, you need good conditions to drag them out and slush won't do.

What a bummer. To think at the end of the season, we use 12" extensions to get throuth the 4 feet of ice.

Terribly sorry about your dip today.

Hope to meet some of you quinte fishing regulars when I am up in February.

Catch em' big!

Happy new year.

. wow bud. close call. glad yer safe.......... thats the trouble with current areas...... not only does the ice melt from the top down it also melts from the bottom up. with all that rain you know theres a current under the ice in pinched off channles.......... i was on big bay yesterday. ice is still safe. but you know what a guy had his ATV out there dragging a bunch of gear and a protable hut. . i had to wonder what kinda death wish he was on... the day before the ice moaned, cracked, and you know how you hear the air bubbles move under the ice......... its scary eh...... but you know what quiet ice is much worse if you ask me, and yesterday it was dead scilent.. the lesson is soft ice dont make a sound...... always something to think about, this time of year i pay close attention to the cracks running thru the ice and stay away from areas where the fractures seem to all run together. best to go around them rather than think its safe to walk thru them... you just never know and it only takes one time.... no fish is worth that.......... best stick to slack water spots for now. and away from any channles and current areas........... the ice that freezes first always stays the safest longer . lets just pray for a cold snap......... good luck..... id like to add that the hole i punched on thuresday was the same as i left it on friday barely a skim of ice over the hole after 20 hours the weather is holding but its just not making ice

I used alot of caution when walking out and like I said it's gotta have more open spots after the rain last night! Ty guys! I dont mess with ice usually that I know is unsafe and I didnt think it would be that drastic of a change in one day! Dumb move! Anyone check the 14 day trend dont look good.

WOW 8O that's just insane. What happened to "the coldest winter in 15 years"? I can't believe the fluctuations.

Good to hear you're ok for sure!
