Hey that's cool, that's the second one listed on the board this winter.

We know they're in the Bay, but rarely do we hear of one being caught.

Adding whitefish to the list of fish increases the potential of the unknown each time you bring up a fish at the end of the line.

Cheers

That is a nice sized whitefish. I note the body mass relative to the length and wonder about its diet.....hmmm. Perhaps it is just because it is a photo and throwing me off.

Most people that fish Quinte rarely catch them, with the population being very high about ten years ago....with no anglers. My understanding is that the population has now decreased with no one historically targetting them in our neck of the woods. It remains untapped in my opinion with the only people I ever knew targetting them being commercial interests in years past.

Simcoe on the other hand sees more people try for these soft mouthed wonders. Alberta also has a strong following for the whitefish.

There are also populations of whitefish in Skootamata and the Mazinaw that equally see extremely low angling pressure that specifically targets them. The trick always seemed to me in catching them, was to use smaller hooks and be prepared for a soft bite. Hooksets often need to be less aggressive.

Just some notes while in the field, working away from home.

I note the comment regarding edibility from Grizzly. Some people swear by whitefish with a lot of folks that I have met enjoying them smoked. I personally have not enjoyed them, but am somewhat spoiled in my tastes, given travelling and experiencing a lot of different things relating to fish. Give it a try sometimes as they are there for the taking and underharvested as a general rule.

I wish everyone a safe and productive time over the last few days of the Quinte icefishing season.

Regards

I think before people eat them they should check the sportfish eating guide to see if they're "ok" to consume. Last time I checked the guide it said that the whitefish in the bay were heavily restricted for eating, due to the chemicals/mercury that are in the bay's waters, and the nauture of the whitefish for being a fat laden fish, similar to Steelhead and Salmon.

But hey, to each his or her own!
