I got in the walleye vs. pickerel arguement once and I was arguing for pickerel. After A LOT of research I had to admit that pickerel is what Grizzly mentioned a fish a lot like a pike in the states. It is actually incorrect to call a walleye a pickerel. Like I said I was arguing that you could call a walleye a pickerel so I searched long and hard for something to back up my case but I couldn't find any. Bottom line is everyone knows that you are talking about when you say pickerel so its not the end of the world, but technically its incorrect.

I wonder how we came to call walleye, "pickerel"? Especially for it to be come as wide spread as it is.

The walleye vs. pickeral subject got way out of control on another fishing message board a while back too. Kind of like partridge vs. grouse, old timers like my father call them partridge but he knows he's shooting ruffed grouse, he'd never say the word walleye either. Just an old school thing if you ask me.

What Grizzly said. The Pocono region of North East Pennsylvania is loaded with small lakes containing Chain Pickerel. They look like a smaller Northern Pike with slightly different markings. They are very aggressive and toothy critters - especially during the winter on shiners hung beneath a tip-up.
