I have a Coleman sportcat catalytic heater that I use in my shelter. I have noticed while it is running that the the only place it glows red is around the outside (2-3 inch band)of the ceramic pad on top. The middle always stays dark. Is this a defect? There is no way for me to check to see if there is heat coming off the centre because the outside is quite toasty and you can't get a hand near it.

Thanks

Mine does the same thing. I think that its the way that they work. Mine doesn't hat my Polar Express very well, my question would be how well they work in other shelters?

I only used mine a few times and it did the same as yours. I sent it back and picked up the BlackCat. Works the same just hotter and more fuel.

I use a black cat as well. It works great but uses a tank per hour. I have a sport cat that I use at work ( a moving company )to heat our trailer brakes and thats all its ever been good for.

A tank an hour heck I either use my one burner stove or my lantern and they will run for at least 6 hours on a one pound tank

I was wondering how well the mr heater portibles work???
Ie fuel consumption and heat

I have an 3-man Eskimo pop up and the heater really doesn't do much. I keep it on and warm my face and hands as needed. It's only rated at 1500 btu.
So it's not the best heater to use for a thinly shelled shelter

I got it for $20 off kijiji so it's no big deal

I use a Coleman propane stove to heat the hut. I'm cooking and heating. Best of both worlds. I'm partial to hot coffee and beans. Gary

I have the MR heater but not the buddy. Just the round one that screw right to a 20lb tak. Nic thing is is that there is no tilt switch. I put my 20lb tank in a milk crate and lay it sideways to cook on the heater. It keeps my hut VERY toasty (frabill trek II) It is a little bulky though. I'm going to figure something out to keep the tank outside and make a braket so the heater can sit closer to the ground and not be so much in the way for getting in and out of the hut. I can leave the door open in -20 with theheater and still be hot.
