Hi Everyone,

The fire department is setting out a barricade around the hole where the truck went through the ice this morning at Minnie Blakely Shoal. The area is just west of the red buoy and should be avoided. The truck did go through and it will be a recovery operation at a later date. The anglers were locals and I will not state who they were just that we are pleased that they are safe. The last couple of days the weather has been warm and the underwater currents in that area has made ice unsafe for vehicles.

If you are heading out there be safe and watch for the barricade so that no one else goes through.

Best regards,
Sam

Amen Maveric. I cringe every time i see a heavy object come near me when im out on the ice........ for two reasons. one what if they take me down with them, and second if they go thru im gonna have to put my life in danger by trying to help them.......... I was fishing this year early a couple days after we had that rain and thaw , I figured there was 4 inches of ice where I was standing i wasnt sure the ice was all that safe in some spots, yet i see an ATV driving twordge me with not just one guy, but 3 men on the machine, and towing there gear behind, I waved them away and all I got was a funny look from them. you gotta be a brave sole to be the first to drive out on the ice, and a stupid one to have 2 friends aboard with you.........

I agree with grizzly i had a similar experiance this season. An 8x8 argo came wheeling by me at maybe 5 yards away. And im sure they thought they were safe in there amphibious vehicle but had no concern for me or my brother. i could feel the wave roll under the ice to close for my comfort.

we were fishing at green buoy on monday night, tuesday a.m, a "nice chap" in truck was barrelling around , drove by our shelter 20ft. away, thought a train was coming in.....
wonder if it was same "chap"???
On the lighter side of it could you imagine the phone conversion with the (sank truck owners)wife , maybe starts like " hi honey, can you come and get me over at massasauga point"
wife - where's your truck??
well honey (-big pause - ) I sank it ....

Anyone care to fill in the rest, or leave it to the imagination...

think & play safe out there guys ,

Eye Chaser....been in that conversation and done that. The difference was that it was spring, (late May at midnight) and we were about to snap on the boat when the emergency brake failed and it slid into the water.

The water was 52 degrees and I tried to jump in and save it but had to exit quickly as it was going upright before it sank. That was stupid and it seemed like one hell of a swim back to shore with thick wet clothes and boots.

Lost the truck and had to have someone dive out the next day to get it.
Not a good call to my buddies wife; him owning the truck but at least we can say we were sober and being careful and doing what was correct.

From now on, I make sure no one is in the vehicle taking the boat in or out of the water just in case. We would have normally had his young son with us and in his car chair. It was a night time Dupont walleye derby being held so it was too late for him to join us. The thought of that is horrible.

People need to be more mindful and careful...not just for themselves but the others that will do anything to help in case of an accident. You always here horror stories from both sides.

Cheers
