Well after a later then expected departure it was off to Hay Bay last Friday afternoon. It turns out that we actually stayed at Cedar Trees Resort and not Cedar Point, however it sure sounds like Cedar Point is worth paying a visit to. Cedar Trees was great! Nice clean, updated cabin, nice docks and launch, nice hosts and extremely quiet. The only down fall was no hot water in the cabin we stayed in but the showers were only 75ft away. No big deal in my opinion.
Friday evening we got on the water around 6:30pm and not being to familiar with the bay, we decided to stay with in eye sight of the resort. This was not very difficult do to the extremely bright light that was at the docks. We head over to where a group of boats were fishing (When in Rome do as the Romans.) We opted to troll for the evening a just cover some water. We ended of staying in the 6-8ft range as that was all the depth we could find and it was all that we needed. In a couple short hours we had 4 pike and 3 walleyes on a white glass husky and a blue and gray bomber. The walleye were all below the slot and all fish were released. The winds picked up and so we headed in before the storm blew in.
Saturday my buddy woke up with migraine and it wasn't even from drinking! So we took it easy and watched the rain just a pouring down. Went down a few times and turned the bilge, ran into town to get a couple of things and finally my buddy's headache was gone. Let's go fishing!!! NOT! Brought all the gear down to the boat and went to start it up and no go! @#$%^&*()!!! I have discovered that two of my switches once wet will short out, one being the live well pump which probably was running most of the night causing the battery to go dead. So pull out the battery and put it on charge for a couple of hours and then we go fishing. Headed out to the mouth of the bay and some deeper water. Concentrated on 12ft or deeper and only managed 3 pike and a bass. After a couple of hours of fishing we headed up to the island and managed to get a couple of pike. Decided to go back to the hot spot from the night before and caught 4 walleye and 5 pike. Not too bad of an outing. Once again the husky and bomber paid off and all fish were released.
Sunday woke up to the rain and buddy with another migraine. Got up and packed up had some breakfast and decided to go out as the skies were clearing. Decided to try for some back bay pike, as it isn't to often we get the chance. Fished around some pencils at the top of the bay and got 4 pike in about 1/2 an hour. Drifted the deeper weeds (5-6ft) and got another 6 pike and a couple of bass. Decided to get out of the wind and fished a bay back into a feeder creek and man were the pike ever stacked up in there
I'm guessing the we got at least another 20 pike and lost at least another 6-8 of which the biggest one was about 10-12lbs! (It’s always the big one that gets away isn’t?) We also caught a couple more bass, a perch and a walleye (In the slot). We even had garpike smacking our baits. Most of the fish came on spinner baits with orange skirts and brass blades. We saw the garpike were cruising just below the surface and were blowing up on zara spooks. Very cool!! Off the water by 3pm and once again all fish were released.
All in all a very enjoyable weekend and already looking forward to my next trip.
