I'm not positive but the only rubber band thing I've heard of is to replace the spring system on the tattle flag set ups,
meaning you would still need the clips.
Franks Great Outdoors seems to be about the best priced place to buy clips.
Heres a link that shows the rubber band method.

I think sailor is talking about big boards.

Yes, lots of guys use rubber bands instead of clips. Just put your line through the rubber band then do a double loop on your mast line. It will be a fixed release and just snap when you hit a fish. Lots of salmon guys do this. It works really well. You can also use the rubber bands, as fixed sliders on your riggers instead of a free slider.

For clips I like the mini scotty releases. Available lots of places.

I alway's use rubber band instead of clips, wether it's on my downriggers or boards. the trick is to put a small nick in the band or it will never break.

You can't beat tjhe scotty mimi power grips. One tip buy some bow wax, cover yourr planer line with it. It will protect your line and it mill make clips slide better

Now that is a good tip landshark. I had a lot of trouble with my line fraying from sun damage. Bow line wax is genius!! Thank you.

Use # 19 rubber bands for Salmon off big boards all the time just half hitch the band on your line and place it on a shower curtin ring and send it down the line 1 band will hold a 600' section of copper on a calm day when its rough you may have to go to 2 bands the only thing is you need a 10lbs king to break the band

Another tip, some people use a boat hook to grab the planer linre when attactching a release. Others walk to the front of the bac to grab it. Take a piece of light rope, cord and attach it to the. Planer line and midway down the boat. Then u can just grab the cord and pull the line to ya. Use a big snap swivel or clevis on each end

I use small rubber bands with shower curtain rings on my big boards as well. You can see the bands stretch with small fish (shakers)and bigger fish will break the bands. They are very cheap and work well. One other benefit is if you reel in your line to clear a rod, you can reel the rubber band onto your reel and let out to same point on the line without using a new rubber band. Just let out the line to the rubber band clip to the shower ring and let it slide down the main line. The double loop does reduce slipping and also works good for fixed slider on a downriggers.
