Intro and a few questions

Hello I have been a lurker on this board for the past couple of years. I mainly fish the upper bay / Point Anne / Rush bar which is close the where I live out of a blue Lund SSV. I also have a trailer at Quinte Isle /Salmon Point but I don't really have enough boat for Lake Ontario. I trailer to West Lake quite a bit.

My question is: where do people catch smallmouth around here? The tournament guys seem to catch them out of Lake Ontario. I would love to know where/how. I am also looking for a bigger boat that will safely handle Lake O if anyone has any recommendations /advice.

Many of the guys catch the smallmouth on the shoals and around the islands, Amherst, false duck, main duck, grape, nutt and timber to name a few. There are also alot of shoals, humps, drop offs etc.... which many good digital charts show. Spinnerbaits, tubes, drop shots and jerkbaits all work. Finding them can be tough on some days and other days they seem to be everywhere. Good luck

Welcome to the board.

Your boat is probably ok for the Big Lake, you just can't fish everyday....

You have to pick your days when the weather and water are right and you can be comfortable out there. Somedays fishing aint gonna happen no matter how large your boat is. Those days are stay home or travel to quieter water.

Lots of places, like Dan said islands and shoals, have a long look at your chart and picksome spots and on a nice day take a run to check it out.

We fish in a small boat early in the spring for browns, but have been chased off by the waves that grow larger as the winds increase.

I actually went out to Long Point / Traverse last summer to try and find some smallmouth. Didn't get out too far before the waves sent me back. Caught some casting from shore however. That boat launch at Traverse feels like you have fallen off the end of the earth.

I was fouling nearly every cast on this fibrous green algae that was all over in the shallow water. Don't know if that stuff is found farther out or maybe it is only certain times of the year.

I haven't been back because I hear the boat launch is closed (long drive to check)

just launch out of wapoos not to far of a drive to get to the smallies then
